Should I go see former Iranian President Khatami speak tonight?

I'm torn. I have an opportunity to go, but I would miss 2 classes.

yeah he's gonna be here at harvard soon too. i'd try to go just to say i saw him, but it's likely sold out.

I heard today that the Liberian president is coming to speak here at Georgia Tech next week. I'm probably going to go listen to her. (though it's not going to be political as much as technological)

seriously, i can't figure it out. this is a guy who consistently attacked israel since he believed it was an 'illegal state' and just last year touted his 'love' for hezbollah. how does the US get off welcoming people like this?

i could care less what he has to say, or what he might do. frankly he won't say or do anything that affects me. nor am i afraid of what he might know. i do however feel that he knows things that would be helpful to us in this war on, not to mention the current situation in the ME with iran, israel, hezbollah, etc. am i afraid of what he knows? why would i be? it just doesn't make sense to let this guy walk around the country making money giving lectures. what boggles my mind is that the american people are welcoming him as well. just weird.

Lol, that last sentence made the post... had me

The guy is harmless, and even IF he knows ANYTHING that we don't know, why would we detain him and boot him from our country? That would only show that we are scared of him and the middle east. If anything, it would strengthen hatred for us in Iran and cause a large portion of American citizens to think that our gov't doesn't want us to know what he has to say (even if it's true or not).

Doing what you said can ONLY be the result of fear of either him, his country, or his religion (or any combination thereof). It is most certainly NOT based on logic, because logically, he has nothing to offer us except education, which he seems to be offering freely.

Why wouldn't he be? I'd be interested in hearing what he has to say if for no other reason than a hope to try to understand the hatred for the US in Iran better (I mean, I think I got a decent handle on it, but hearing it from the horse's mouth would be great).

If I were the president of a college, I'd want him to come talk to my students so they could get a better handle on what is going on in the world from multiple prespectives.
