GWB, despite how unpopular he will be by the end of his term, will still rake in millions just by virtue of being a former President.

There should be a limit on how much the tax payer is billed for in this day and age. If the President' net worth is say 10 million anytime after they leave office, they ought to cease getting tax payer money.

You just don't get it...could you imagine how humiliated a future president might be if Bush and Clinton refused government aid and he didn't?

He'd look like a failure on welfare...too much of a loser to avoid government plans for the president, and the whole situation would just make our country look bad...you need to look at the big picture

Imagine someone like Mike Huckabee, he's no Bush/Romney/Clinton...he simply doesn't have that much money...4 years of being in office im sure he would have been kicked out, and then what? He's a nice guy, but as Jimmy Carter can tell you, you don't get big speaking fees as a one-term president who wasn't very popular...and after the presidency your political life is over, and you can't really get a private job that's real because that's insulting the office the presidency...so supposing he doesn't get those speeaking jobs...he'd be living off the pension, and then the whole world would laugh at him because Clinton and Bush were living in complete luxury without any assistance while he needed the plan

We'd all look like a fucking disgrace in the end

First, I don't agree with your premise. Secondly, there's a difference between accepting tax payer money and abusing the system.

NEWSWEEK- It is often a measure of Hillary Clinton's discomfort when she smiles broadly and lets loose with her deep, often-mocked belly laugh. So it was at a press conference at the Pittsburgh airport this afternoon, when a CNN producer asked Clinton whether the fact that her husband had earned $800,000 for speeches designed to boost the free trade deal with Colombia - a deal that she opposes (she even demoted her controversial chief strategist Mark Penn for advocating same) constituted a conflict of interest? After all, those earnings may have comprised a part of the $5 million Clinton loaned her campaign in February. First, Clinton giggled. Then she laughed. She waved her arms in the air. Then came an "Oh my." More laughter. A few eye rolls and head shakes. Then this: "I mean, how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?"

Huh? The question, reasonable enough, was hardly a thigh-slapper.

Well you didn't read my post eh? I said it ought to cease when the net worth is at a certain amount, say 10 million - no decision necessary.

Again, Huckabee would have been the "president who needs to live off the government because no one likes him" and Bush-Clinton would be "the successful presidents who made $10 million after their term ended"

Making any ex-president a figure of fun (internationally) hurts the entire office and our country

The only reason we know how much Clinton made is because his wife is running, every other president's worth is kept private (for good reason). We, the public, will never know who is making what and who is getting a stipend and who is not, so there would be no one to make fun of.

their income is kept private, the amount the government gives them is well accounted for...and it would be noticed whether they took it or not

there are simply too many governmental employees involved to think it would be kept off drudge and subsequently the world media

in a fair fight, it might be a fair fight. but after hillary and obama shove plungers up each others asses in order to get to the front of the line? they're making it harder.

that is if mccain doesn't die of old age or exhaustion before the race is over
what's he got to be exhausted about? counting how many times the dems throw an election to the GOP through their own stupidity?

if it wasn't for hillary, wright and "cling to guns/rel" would have really really screwed him, but because a lot of americans are watching a primary fight, he's going to be able to weather them

If Hillary had given in, we'd have seen Obama with a 10pt lead, but with those two things, he'd be dropping like a rock

Just a reminder to those following Hillary's courtship to southern blue collar whites:
During the past week, Sen. Hillary Clinton has presented herself as a working class populist, the politician in touch with small town sentiments, compared to the elitism of her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama.

But a telling anecdote from her husband's administration shows Hillary Clinton's attitudes about the "lunch-bucket Democrats" are not exactly pristine.

In January 1995, as the Clintons were licking their wounds from the 1994 congressional elections, a debate emerged at a retreat at Camp David. Should the administration make overtures to working class white southerners who had all but forsaken the Democratic Party? The then-first lady took a less than inclusive approach.

"Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

Here's a 3 minute video that reminds me of the McCain videos where they show him making two opposite statements before/after.
