another thing...

what's the purpose of providing a rewarding system (money) as you suggest to get better grades if they're not planning on doing anything afterwards anyway? the point of grades is what...to have a better chance at something after high school right? ie college

and those that plan on going to college already have that rewarding system...grades.

you show me stats that many poor people don't go to college, and many might not even want to. so what good does it do to encourage them to get good grades?

Well, for one, if they had good grades they'd get all sorts of scholarship offers and probably could go to college at the same rate as rich families. But if they still don't go to college, the reward would be not having a country full of uneducated retards who can barely read.

This whole thing seems nice, but it's destined not to encourage students to work harder, but rather to have teachers make schoolwork easier so more students get As and thus they get more bonus money and students are happier with them.

granted, offering money for grades will probably increase grades.

but I have yet to see how offing money for grades will keep us from having "a country full of uneducated retards who can barely read"

...............as if we have that now

They're not supposed to ensure anything. They're just a measuring stick.

"Teaching to the test" is the main complaint people (including most teachers) have with our educational system though; instead of teaching thinking skills and the like, teachers are just addressing things on the standardized tests to try and make their kids pass it because schools place so much emphasis on getting good results on the standardized tests.

Your solution really isn't going to fix anything if you still use standardized testing as the measuring-stick, you're just throwing more money at a broken system.

I was considered pretty successful in my field, until I couldn't physically do it anymore due to injury and politics, and I got a GED at 26.

if either of you read the conversation we were having, you'd see that neither he was talking about high school graduates being successful, nor was i talking about high school graduates being unsuccessful. intead, if you read, he mentioned that good grades in high school would 'keep the world from having a bunch of uneducated retards' at which point i laughed. a high school education, IMO, is hardly 'educated'. more of a stab at our educational system than anything else.

but of course, instead of reading the posts you'd prefer to attack me as an 'intellectual snob'. that's cool, it's pathetic, but whatever.

I used to work in construction and know LOTS of guys who have nothing more than a GED and have done quite well by themselves and their family.

I really am surprised you and I agree about this particular issue.

Did you think something from my other views indicated we would disagree on this?

Just curious.

You've approached this whole thread from the "educated snob" prespective... saying (incorrectly) that 1% of people don't want to go to college and insinuating that a college education is required to be worth a damn.

It's not YOU specifically though, a lot of people think that way. It's also seen in both parties, not just one.

Well, you oftentimes lean a bit left, and democrats often see themselves as "progressive thinkers." That usually entails seeing the population as two main groups: those smart enough to think like them and those too stupid (or too selfish) to think like them.

It's just my personal observation from talking to people and shit. Conservatives are just as guilty as liberals, but I've always noticed it more in liberals. But your personal experiece, of which I had little knowldge before this thread, gives you added prespective.

from personal experience, I would say at least 5% don't even care if they graduate high school
