Yeah our parents defiantly had a better shot at getting up the ladder with just a HS diploma.

My mom started as a secretary for a telco in the late 60's for close to minimum wage on a HS diploma and she hasn't had to go back to school in all this time and worked her way up pretty far in Ameritech/SBC/AT&T. It's really hard for people to do that now in a purely buisness office environment.

Yeah, my dad got through HS by the skin of his teeth, started at a company sweeping floors and now runs the place (got a break when the company was a sinking ship and people were bailing... he did some estimating, got some jobs for the company, and pulled them out of the water).

There are LOTS of stories just like that out there. Hard work and dedication can get you far. But then, there are also lots of people who are completely content with their unskilled job because it brings home enough money for them to support their family, which is what REALLY makes them happy.

I don't fully agree.. I think there are lots of things that people without college educations can do. A lot of people just don't want to start at the very bottom, and that's just what you gotta do.

Yeah, I'm a lower/middle class liberal who has only worked in a blue collar world. Kind of rare.

There is a WIDE range of intelligence out there, democrats aren't the only smart people in the country. And a lot of the low income democrat voters do so because they want the hand outs the democrats promise. Do you think they're educated and/or unselfish?

That's true, but is far easier for our parents to work their way up from the mailroom to management in an office than it would be for someone now.

I totally agree that people don't want to start out on the bottom though. I'm going to be in that position in the next couple years since I can't really do the physical stuff anymore. Hello 33 year old stockboy.

You're not all-the-way liberal though... that's why you and I agree just as much as we disagree

This is kinda getting off subject, but what about IT related stuff? You can get Cisco certified or something like that and not have to lift more than a mouse supporting networks

If you can get into Server Forensics, that's going to be the next big thing (well, that's what I'm projecting). Right now there are very few people who do it, but the demand is growing huge. There'll be lots of money for people in that field in the next 10-15 years.

It's pretty cool stuff... it's like CSI, except really nerdy since it has to do with hackers
