Because it's so out of touch with reality. The average salary in the US is something like 45 grand? You make it sound like everyone is getting 6 figure jobs out of college. I think people earning 6 figures are in the top 10% of the country and are obviously a very small minority.

I would agree with that, kiplingers and money both reported this past may as being the second best season for graduates behind 1999.

That's not really at issue. Alot of people are working, yes. But the average buying power of the US worker is lower than it used to be. We have to spend a much larger portion of our income on basic things like food and housing then we ever did before. Most house holds are getting by on two incomes no better than they did on one income in the 1950's.

for the rest of your life you're going to be saying 'we have to spend more on food and housing than we ever did before'

my uncle asks me how much i pay for rent. whne i say '1100/mo' he laughs and says 'i had to pay 150/mo' it's never going to change. that's how it works.

unemployment is low. I agree and I understand. people are getting jobs out of college. Awesome. Now if they could only raise a faimly on a single income. Boy that would be great.

Thats part of economics, it fluctuates almost constantly. We have a decade up and a decade down. As you know from 72 to 81 things were piss poor. However, most of the time from 82 to 1999 was pretty damn good.

You're not honestly trying to compare todays standard of living to 1950 are you?

no not really. there is this thing called inflation right? and it makes things more expensive over time... usually the amount of money people earn also goes up with inflation or even better, people's incomes increase faster than inflation meaning they are more well off year after year...
however.. and I will say this for the third time... our buying power today is less than it was 40 years ago. Wage growth for the average american is being outpaced by inflation and it has been since the 70's. what don't you understand about this basic concept?

Wow so he would have had a shit load more disposable income. Oh wait, there's that inflation and cost of living thing.

because i see people making more money as well? starting salaries are higher. to me, that seems as though it's a response to the market. for me, i'm making almost twice as much in boston as i would be in nashville, because of what? cost of living. the economy takes care of itself that way. people are aware, the economy is aware, businesses are aware. i really have no idea what you're talking about.
