| I thought I might start a nice fun thread full of North vs. South anger I'm just going to make some of my own discussion topics, feel free to and your own or reply to mine. 1) IT'S NOT THE WAR OF NORTHER AGGRESSION! This is true for a few reasons, some more obvious than others A. The most obvious, the South fired on Fort Sumter first. A Federal (northern) location that was not part of the South Carolinas state terrertory. B. The argument sometimes comes up that there is nothing in the constitution that prohibits secession. Sure this is true, but the South knew what it was doing was not kosher or parallel with a fair democracy, clearly shown by providing no way to secede in the CSA constitution. C. America from its earliest colonial period is all about revolution. These shows to be a completely false comparison when you begin to look at the origins of the Revolutionary War. The colonies lacked representation; the Southern states had fair representation. 2) The war was very much about slavery. The "it was states rights" claim is pretty bogus. It’s nothing more than a manner to get around stating that you support a side that wanted to work a whole race of people to death and didn't want to be put in the poor house if their property were giving equal rights with other men. No matter what cause you want to claim started the war, States Rights, Economic Issues, they all boil down to Slavery. To deny Slavery is flat out intellectual dishonesty, that is not to say these other issues were not important (or in reality develop importance later through Southern rhetoric) The importance that the institution of slavery played in the cause of the Civil War is indisputable when you look at what the leaders said. | This Yankee likes it down here fine. Though If not for air conditioning I might not. Yeah and they never have really forgotten about that dam war, but they don't beat you over the head about it, and today it was sun shining and nearly seventies degrees it was down right beautiful. Days like today down here you cannot beat and it is in the middle of winter. | ||||
