VIENNA, Austria - Marijuana vending machines in Los Angeles violate international treaties and should be shut down, the U.N.-affiliated drug control board said Friday.

"The International Narcotics Control Board is deeply concerned about reports that computerized vending machines to dispense cannabis (marijuana) have been put into operation in Los Angeles," Philip O. Emafo, president of the board, said in a statement.

At least three Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensaries have installed vending machines to distribute the drug to people who carry cards authorizing marijuana use. The drug is said to alleviate chronic pain, loss of appetite and other ailments.

Supporters say the machines, which dispense 1/8th or 2/8th of an ounce of marijuana at a time, offers users lower drug prices and increases security.

Marijuana use is illegal under U.S. law, which does not recognize the medical marijuana laws in California and 11 other states.

The Drug Enforcement Agency and other U.S. agencies have been shutting down major medical marijuana dispensaries throughout California in the last two years and charging their operators with felony distribution charges.

"We know that the use of cannabis is illegal under federal law of the United States and we trust the authorities will stop such activities, which contravene the international drug control treaties," Emafo said.

In its statement, the Vienna-based drug board also said scientific research about the therapeutic usefulness of cannabis or cannabis extracts was still in progress and had not produced much evidence.

The board is an independent monitoring body for the implementation of the United Nations international drug control conventions.

To me, this is beyond bullshit for one. Well, for one, the Federal law trumping state law is bullshit in its own right, but now "World Law" trumping state law? Please. A clear violation of the right to govern locally.

Do people really care if dying cancer patients smoke a blunt? (And yes I know you can get a prescription for basically any reason).

If the feds have authority (and they do) and the feds entered into these international treaties against dispensing drugs then the UN has every right to bitch about the machines.

If the Constitution were being followed, the Federal government would have zero say. But the Feds have thrown Constitutional restraints on their intervention within states out the window, they did it a LOONG time ago.

I just don't understand why the federal government cares. They are actually expending resources to prosecute these people. Why? They gain nothing. There is no revenue in it. No one is being harmed. It's not a criminal offense in the state. I just don't understand why the Fed wants to be involved in this. UN resolution or not, it's still our federal government that agreed to the terms and agreed to enforce it.

It is a bit beyond me though, anyone thinking those things were a good investment. How long did they give themselves before their 10,000 (guessing) dollar vending machines were confiscated by the feds or broken by some kids.

It's a pretty stupid idea.

The more I hear about this stuff though, the more clear it is that the marijuana that they sell in CA has very little to do with medicine. It's really just a backdoor way to legalize weed. You don't even need a prescription. You just go to a doctor and he gives you some sort of recomendation. You don't even need a valid reason. You can get it for shoulder pain if you want. Oh I pulled a muscle, I need to smoke a joint. That takes away from the legitamacy of the claims that it's for medical purposes when clearly it's major use in CA is recreational. They were talking about it on NPR the other day. These "dispensories" have actual menus with crap like "maui wowie" on there.

That's definately the menu from a respectable medical facility right?

Don't get me wrong. I am all for medical marijuana, and I would be all for legalizing it for recreational use. But CA is just sort of thumbing thier nose at the law and lying about the medical use aspect. It's just dishonest and it bothers me.

I don't have a problem either. Not with serious medical problems. When standard medical treatment does not work.

But these are just fronts for growers selling brand names. That is how obvious it is.

In all Fairness, the US can't enforce any laws. Our federal government had to choose to agee with them and then choose to enforce the rules. Blame our government not the UN.
