McCain Trusted More than Obama on National Security, Iraq, and the Economy

McCain Trusted More than Obama on National Security, Iraq, and the Economy

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

With the general election campaign season coming soon, voters currently trust John McCain more than Barack Obama on issues of National Security, the War in Iraq, the Economy, and Taxes. Obama is trusted more when it comes to Reducing Government Corruption. The Republican hopeful has a slight lead over the Democratic frontrunner in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.

McCain is trusted more by 55% of voters when it comes to National Security issues. Obama is trusted more by just 30% on this point. Just half (51%) of Democrats express more trust in Obama than McCain on national security. Unaffiliated voters prefer McCain by a two-to-one margin.

McCain’s advantage on other issues is far smaller.

On Iraq, McCain has a much smaller advantage—49% trust McCain while 39% prefer Obama. Democrats, by a 61% to 22% margin, prefer Obama. Republicans overwhelmingly prefer McCain (83% to 12%). Unaffiliated voters are more evenly divided—46% prefer McCain while 41% prefer Obama.

When it comes to the economy, 45% prefer McCain while 39% trust Obama more. Unaffiliated voters are evenly divided on this issue. The economy has emerged as the top issue in the early stages of Election 2008. Generically, Democrats are trusted more than Republicans on the economy and several other issues. The Rasmussen Consumer Index has shown that consumer confidence is near the lowest levels of the post-9/11 era.

On taxes, 42% trust McCain, 37% Obama.

When it comes to Reducing Government Corruption, Obama has the advantage. The Democrat is trusted more by 43% of voters while 34% prefer McCain. Among unaffiliated voters, 46% trust Obama, 25% McCain.

Rasmussen Reports™: The most comprehensive public opinion coverage ever provided for a mid-term election.

I must say this is a surprise!

Perhaps I have been a victim of the constant media drumbeat of how poor Republicans are doing on any issue, and on the economy and even National Security in particular. How the Bush legacy will sink any GOP candidate like a stone in 2008. Did I begin to fall for it before seeing numbers like these?

thats cause the media is so liberal it makes it seem like the country would completely vote demo in this election. i think once it gets closer to it though, and the polls come out, the same pesky rural fuckers that put bush back in office in '04 are gonna come out in force for McCain.

not that I have a problem with that this time around.....

It doesn't really matter, especially since we're not out of primary season yet. Those numbers will improve when Hillary voters move behind Obama. Additionally, how do you rectify that with national poll numbers that still have McCain trailing by a wide margin to Obama?

You sound just like the wishful thinkers before the 2006 midterm massacre.

I guess you missed the recent LA Times/Bloomberg Poll?

McCain was ahead of Obama 44 to 42

And still further ahead of Hillary!

Try reading the poll again. It has nothing to do with competition between Hillary and Obama. It was a poll of trust with each candidate, not vote for one.

Wow. One poll with Obama losing. What does every single other poll of a national contest show?

I have no reason to be certain who will win in November? Not even close! I want that on record.

I simply point out to people who think McCain can't win are just full of it!

The most steady number is that McCain beats Hillary.

The Obama/McCain numbers seem to be the ones that move.

And yet I can't root for her Upset on Tuesday.

I just can't do it!

the longer this drags out, the better is it for the Republicans.

Just look at the Super delegate debacle, they are intentionally disenfranchising their voters

Not to be a douche, but Bobby Kennedy would have MASSACRED Nixon in the general election, so I don't really see how that election cycle gives anyone cause to celebrate.

Let's step back here for a second, though, and think about what this thread is saying: Americans trust Republicans more on matters of foreign policy, and are pretty much split on the economy.

Wow....this is such new and vital information. These shocking trends have clearly never been evidenced in the past
