You guys ever go to WholeFoods ?

I had to go to Whole Foods today to find something specific for my wife. She's a teacher and she has a bunch of kids in her class with food alergies. So I needed to go and find some cupcake mix that was egg free and nut free. Wholefoods is a "different" kind of place. This one is in the Princeton area so it's even more "different". I felt like I didn't belong and that I would soon be discovered as an outsider. It's just a strange kinda store. I don't even know how to describe it. Everything is organic, even most of the pet food. In the isle with the baking stuff there was more Blue Agave nectar than there was honey.

This is the stuff I had to buy there:

It is peanut, egg, dairy, and nut free. I'm not sure what is in there. Most cake mixes have eggs and milk in them. How can you make cake without eggs and milk??

Does your wife work with "special" children?

How many kids could have allergies to all this common stuff?

We have whole foods around here, but I've been lucky not to venture into one of those places.

I don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but in NJ allergies with children is becoming incredibly common.

No, these are normal kids. There are a couple of kids in the class with alergies so that means that they can't have any of that stuff in the classroom at all. It's quite serious. If a child with a peanut allergy comes in contact peanuts, even by proxy, they can have severe allergic reactions. They have to have one of those epi-pens in the class just in case.

It can be that serious but it rarely is. Very few kids are that allergic...of course it'd suck to have one of those kids in her class and not know it's that severe.

My niece is allergic to peanuts. One day my son had a reaction to something and we didn't know what. Later that day we were at a friend's house and their dog had a treat with peanut butter in it and licked my son and he swelled up so we immediately thought "peanut allergy." We had him tested and he was a "1" on a 14 point scale for allergies to the peanuts (1 is "barely allergic", 14 is "could die if eats a peanut"). Turns out he had a severe allergic reaction to their dog, not the dog's peanut butter treat. So we were happy.

I was talking with the doc and he said peanut allergies can be unreal. The girl in the waiting room was a 200+ on the scale. He said if someone opened a peanut shell with her in the room she'd probably end up in the hospital. But he also said the overwhelming majority are nowhere near that.

I know it's just a supermarket. It just has a different sort of customer base than other supermarkets that I tend to frequent. There are some strange things in the isles with vitamins and such.

Whole Foods is awesome, but the closest one to my place is too far to make shopping their often feasible. But HEB has a similar store called "Central Market" that is a little more mainstream, it has both all the organic stuff as well as more "traditional" food brands, and is much closer to my house so I go there occasionally.

FWIW, the founder of whole foods started out as a hippie (self described "democratic socialist") wanting to build a supermarket that catered to the hippie left... Now that he sees that private business can be a force for good (both societal good and monetary good for himself (up until 2006, where it was reported he apparently reduced his salary as CEO to $1 per year) ) he's a member of the Libertarian Party.

Yes, that one example you cite clearly shows the superiority of the libertarian ideology over everything else without ANY exceptions

Whole foods is awesome! It is a little overpriced though. We used to go there primarily starting about 5 years ago but realized we were paying a lot for the food so we switched to Trader Joe's and haven't looked back. We still get good prepared foods at Whole Foods there for grilling and meals.

Another natural market near us is PCC. We rarely go into PCC markets. I think they are much more natural on the scale of things and can't find even regular foods there. Whole foods you can get most everything you need.

I go into the "regular" supermarkets now and maybe buy a few things and those things are located on either end of the store primarily. I rarely come out with a meal. There are a few isles I have yet to stroll down.

404, mention of libertarian ideological superiority not found. it's just a fact about him that I found interesting, because most people think Whole Foods is some hippie commune run store or something.

Are you saying that people who make a lot of money realize that by supporting low taxes, they can make a lot more money than they previously were? And nothing will change since they don't really rely on the services their taxes support?

This is truly a shocking conclusion.
