I can't figure out why they would need it. Obviously they would want the number for an easy individual id number, but I can't think of anything they could use the number for besides an easy individual id.

They wouldn't use it as a tracking number, but I'm guessing it has something to do with federal shit.

Anyway, I didn't not give it on purpose but it'll be interesting to see how long it'll take them to ask for it again.

I know they used to use your SSN as your ID around here, but stopped about 10 years ago for privacy concerns.

Now they just issue everyone (faculty, student, staff, etc) an 8-digit number with an extension that you don't need to memorize to everything.

You do use the last 4 digits of your SSN to swipe into campus-owned apartments and dorms, however.

yeah this was in 1996. They stopped doing it I think while I was still there.
