so my son is going to get the worst 1st grade teacher

I went to sign him up for 1st grade today. I had the packet with all the stuff they asked for. The lady said "what's his social security number?" and I said "I don't know." She finished filling out the paperwork and handed it to me and said "take this home, your wife will know it, then mail it back."

I said "my wife will know" kind of sarcastic and rolled my eyes. Then turned and started leaving and noticed there were 4 people in line (including me) and 3 of them were men. So I looked at one of them and said "if you don't know something don't worry, your wife will know." The lady behind the counter said "excuse me?" and I said "Do you know your kids' SSN off the top of your head? Because I can tell you my wife doesn't know ours so we have them written down. And next time you need some information how about you let people know in the packet you mail out, because I went through your checklist of things to bring and it doesn't say SSN anywhere in there."

She went

and I said "no, it doesn't" and opened the mailer they sent and it doesn't mention it.

How fucking sexist......."your wife will know."

I get hit with sexist shit like that all the time since I'm the one at home with my kid. People seem to think that only mothers can care properly for their children.

I only know my wife's because recently went through a bunch of financial/health benefits stuff. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't know it.

I don't have kids but I know I wouldn't purposely take the time to memorize their social security numbers. If someone wants you to know your child's SSNs they should inform you ahead of time. Hell even if they wanted YOUR SSN they should have informed you ahead of time. I'm willing to bet there's a lot of adults who don't have their SNN memorized.

Yea, asking you to know your child's SSN off the top of your head is ludicrous.

Not knowing your own by heart is pretty bad, though. Then again maybe I just get asked for it more than most people, which is why I know it.

i dont know it by heart, but if my memory get's jogged i can remember it. as in i only really need to read the first 3 numbers and then i remember the rest

The only reason I know mine is because they used it as our Student ID number at Rutgers. Rutgers was so big that you didn't go by your name, you went by your student ID number. So everywhere you go you had to write your ID number. On tests and papers and all that stuff.

I was going to u lowell when they switched from using SSN to "a 9-digit number of the student's choosing." Guess what most people picked.

Why did they ask for a SSN ?

I can't figure out why they would need it. Obviously they would want the number for an easy individual id number, but I can't think of anything they could use the number for besides an easy individual id.

Maybe to make sure they're legal citizens? Only thing I could think of.
