Obama makes racially insenstitive comment regarding whites

"... .. The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person who, uh, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know there's a reaction that's been been bred into our experiences that don't go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way and that's just the nature of race in our society. We have to break through it..." - Senator Barack Obama

Taylor Marsh: Obama: Grandmother "Typical White Person" - Politics on The Huffington Post

I am beginning to see why Rev. Wright's sermons were so inspiring and enlightening to Obama. Imagine if John McCain or Hillary Clinton had said something about "typical black/Mexican/whatever", the double standard is unbelievable.

I don't see how that's not typical for that generation.

When I look back at my grandmother and her brothers, they would all be considered racists in the PC society we live in now.
They don't hold any animosity either, but they would still act like he's describing.

Now if he's saying that behavior is typical now, I would disagree.

It's insensitive because it suggests a person is or believes something because of their skin color. That's the type of thinking that leads to racism.

I doubt he meant it in that way though.

way to take it out of context, he was talking about his grandma generation, you know 60 plus years ago, when racism and segeration was common and he said that every generation gets better. Racism and for that matter xenophobia was institutionalized back then, or do you disagree?

"we have to break through it" -meaning that is still typical white people behavior according to Obama

how are you going to get past racism while judging people based upon their race and perpetuating stereotypes

I am not that bothered by the "typical" remark. He said she was not a racist, but reacting to bad experiances.

I am far more concerned with the very unapologetic tone of the speech. Instead of dealing with his (Obama's) personal relationship with this person and his history of very vile remarks, he tries to make it into a "holding hands" guilt trip of "race relations" in general. He then uses the Ferraro comments and his Grandma as a comparison when they don't even come close to what the Rev Wright has said on a number of occasions.

He needs to be a leader and run for President, not try to hide behind an attempt to put the whole country on trial for racial insensitivity. I know how liberals eat up this guilt trip stuff, but I am not playing.

I don't care the context in which it is said, if mccain or huckleberry or even clinton gave a speech that included the words "typical black person" s/he'd be in physical and political danger.

And people who think "typical white people" is so true bothers me. Not that Obama said it in the way you defend it. I understand what "Obama" was talking about and it was not racism, but bad experiances that can cause racial prejudice. That is true enough. It is your projection of implied racism on white people that bothers me.

Seeing black people get so bent out-of-shape about the obvious fact that so many of them are criminals makes me laugh so fucking hard.

See how that works?

I thought just the line "typical white person" was disrespective and racist. What the hell does he mean by that? What if I said "typical black person" or "typical brown person" or "typical yellowish person"? That just sounds so demeaning.

IMO, white people put up with non-white name-calling and smears than any other race in the world. There is no excuse for that to happen.

If you look up the stats on world population, you would find that "white people" are the minority race. There are hardly any of us compared to the numbers. It just so happens that we are located in "clumps or groups" and not spread throughout the world.

WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE WHITE PEOPLE?

I don't find it offensive either, but I'm glad he's getting some blow back from the comment. If a white guy had said "typical <insert minority here>" and the skies would open up and hell would rain down on him for his comment. So I think it's only fair he takes at least some heat for the comment if not only for the fact that maybe the next time someone has a verbal gaffe that people will think before they overreact to it.

This is a joke right? White People to this day still:
-Flee neighboors when blacks move in
-Ask Hispanics citizens for greencard/ID
-Search middle eastern-asians as if they were terrorists
-Have a man who will probably be president next who thinks "gooks" is an okay term to use

What vicious smears do white people take?

I've been a white person in rural USA, suburban USA, urban USA...I have never felt smeared once, or been made to feel threatened because of my race, ever...infact being white has given me a tremendous advantage in interviews, I can't count the number of times I've done things like discussed a Seinfeld episode that was a good analogy during the latter part of an interview, something heavily favored by my white interviewers (among other things being white i am able to relate to my white interviewer better)

I say "typical hard-working Latino" all the time, usually in front of black people and white people, because I think Latinos are the hardest working people in America as of today

I'm sorry I lived in the Poconos...that contains Hazleton...the most anti-Hispanic city in the country...I've never heard anyone say anything negative about the work value of Latinos...also in Philadelphia I've never heard it, even from black politicians off the cuff or white ones
