High Schoolers Create Car That Gets 1,693 Miles-Per-Gallon

High Schoolers Create Car That Gets 1,693 Miles-Per-Gallon - Switched: Gadgets, Tech, Digital Stuff for the Rest of Us

Of course I can't find any pics to back this up but if a bunch of High Schoolers can do this, I think having a car that gets 100 MPG isn't much to ask for

I could do that in my backyard.
The question is, can they build a car that can seat 4, has air conditioning, air bags, stability control, a stereo, something that won't distintigrate in a crash, and something that drives well enough that people will want to buy it? I seriously doubt it.

Put a tiny diesel engine on a balsawood frame with no passengers, Make it super aerodynamic, make the wheels as narrow as a sheet of paper, that's pretty much all there is to it. Maybe if you are feeling sassy you could cover it's roof with solar cells and use that to run a booster motor to help with acceleration.

They prolly used like a 10 HP engine seated for one person, hence the reason I am asking for 100 HP - surely we can do all the above for that?

There is actually a contest going on in the "real world" right now to do just that.

$10 million quest for a practical 100-mpg car - Yahoo! News

There is 10 million dollars at stake. If it were easy to make a pratical car get 100MPG then it would be an easy 10 million dollars
