Has there been an election the last 30 years with issues this important?

Guys I ask the question regardless of political affiliation so lets keep it civil.

In this election we have four MAJOR issues at hand:

Economy
Healthcare
Immigration
War

While there's been elections that have featured one or two of these issues, in my life time I do not think there has been an election when all four of these issues were major problems. But in 2008 all of these issues are vitally important for the nation and the future direction this nation is to take. So I must pose the question, is this the most important election in a generation or more? If not, what was more important? If yes how far back do we need to go to find a more pressing election? 1960?

Finally, as important as this election is I feel we the american people have once again been given mediocre choices at best.

I for one don't think any of those issues are "really important" in 2008, except more dead soldiers...which I guess falls under Iraq

The biggest issue is the constitution, as I've said before, and one of these days I'll right a thread out of what the US would look like if we had a 5-6 Justices like Thomas

But no matter what people say, fixing an ecnomy is not something either president can do in a mere 4 years...healthcare inevitable and unless the GOP elects anti-universal presidents for the next 20 years, it will be passed (we dont even know if McCain would REALLY oppose it)...every candidate is pro-amnesty, and that is going to happen...the war, as I commented in 04, if the GOP wins the WH, will continue on for another 4 years of mostly failure (and i was right) and Americans will be even more sick of it...

Democrats would almost certainly capture 60 senate seats, and if by 2012 they rejected McCain for someone like then Sen-Mark Warner, he'd get blown out and the democrats would have a filibuster proof senate on day 1

However, stevens and ginsburg are too frail to take comfort in that fact...

I was referring to the rightward shift brought on by Reagan's election. I don't know how you got that from my post but you missed the point.

Bob Barr and...Mike Gravel...have joined the Libertarian party and it looks like one of them will run as the LP candidate

Vote Libertarian, vote Mike Gravel in 2008?

It was a half-serious one line post, not a term paper. I still don't see how you can interpret it as meaning Carter was a great president.

Carter was running for reelection against Reagan. You said "except this time the good guy will win" which implies that in 1980 the good guy lost. Since Reagan won, that implies Carter was the good guy.

He might be a great person, but as a President he was horrible.
