I saw 'She has had to take extreme measures to pay for her interest-only mortgage of $2,500 a month.' and had a pretty hard time feeling more than passing sadness for her.

As for the ensuing hilarity that was posted about why she owed so much,

Why was this a backfire? I asked two simple questions. I didn't defend her. I didn't say "OMG victim." Nice try though. Address the subject of the thread, not me. Thanks.

Oh please, it is plain as day his inference was correct. We all know where you stand politically.

if anything, you didn't leave your own comments, which is "required", so we are free to discern whatever we want to be your position.

"This is all her fault? She is completely responsible for her situation?"

I have to admit I didn't expect to see so many responses that seemed to be a call for personal responsibility. I was afraid that concept was slowly dying out. What a pleasant suprise!

Let's see...

She was a "loan-processor." She wasn't making $70k per year, she at best had a few good years of commission, most likely by f*cking over other stupid people by getting them into ridiculous loans.

She had a $2500/mo mortgage and had a job that pays $70/k at best. You don't need a college degree in mathematics to recognize this is a dumbass move. She, like so much of the country, thought she could get rich easily by overbuying a house and not doing any work.

Do I think she's personally responsible for her situation?

Yep.

Knowing she cashed in all the equity on the house and then went out and blew all the money?

Yea, I'd say 98% her fault, 2% ignorance.

yeah it was pretty obvious that you were trying to show people that it's not always within your control. Fundamentally I agree with you on that. This was just an unfortunate choice of examples Perhaps it would have been better if she was just an average single mom who was doing OK until she lost her job and medical coverage and then got really sick forcing her into bankruptcy. That would be like 0% her fault.

No, I was just asking because I wanted to understand how people deduce that line of thought. I personally thought she had responsibility for her situation but that it wasn't ALL her fault. I STILL don't think her situation is ALL her fault. From what I gather, most people don't think that it is ALL her fault either.

My wife is a loan processor and that's about what she was making before the housing market crashed.

And how is a processor fucking people over? They don't sell the loans or even talk to the customer other than to get information needed for paperwork. All they do is fill out forms and fax them to the parties who need them.

It's like saying the person who did the admissions paperwork for the students at VT were somehow responsible for them getting shot.

how can her taking $450k in equity loans and blowing it not ALL be her fault? who else's fault is it?

I guess you could make the argument that had the housing market not crashed, she'd be fine.

I wouldn't make that argument, though.

I think we have one of those threads that ends up in a rather good consensus opinion.

Obviously somebody making $70,000 a year should have had more personal responsibility. People with a whole lot less than this know the importance to save and invest.

Who wrote that Fable about the squirrel who spent time saving acorns while the other played about all summer?

Except for in that Ant movie, the grasshoppers invaded the ants and tried to take all their food.

What would be the modern-day equivalent, this lady beating up some homeless people at a shelter and eating all the split-pea soup?

We just figured out that nothing is ever 100% a persons fault.

That comes with living in a Universe not of your own creation I think?

I was thinking Aesop Fables, but I still have that picture of two squirrels in my mind. The same animals in the same environment. The difference was their own behavior. That was the point.
