you're guessing he's not a bigot, and looking at his actions i am guessing he is

he was in his 30s and then 40s and lived through the civil rights era and didn't think much of MLK

it goes beyond his vote, it goes to his "reason" he acts like he just didn't pay attention and didn't really know that much about him to judge either way

seriously, how bigoted can you be if you either A) Lie that much about a racial issue B) are in your 40s, have been hearing about MLK for decades, and think the basic details of the civil rights movement aren't worth remembering

This is, of course, assuming that McCain's decision had anything to do with resenting the outcome of the civil rights movement and/or Martin Luther King Jr. Dogmatic discontent is something generally expected of the irrational; the faithful. Ergo, such an aforementioned assumption requires a bit of a leap of faith if you ask me. Dare I compare such irrationality to that of fundamentalist religious folks?

That's not to say that your claim is incorrect, just that the reasoning you've posted has a big intellectual hole in it.

A lot of the reasoning I'm seeing is "no true scotsman" (with a minor twist).

argument: Everyone who was alive during MLK's time supports civil rights and his federal holiday.
reply: (person) was alive then and doesn't support his federal holiday.
rebuttal: Well, then he must be a bigot!

Like you said it doesn't prove the claim is incorrect, just the reasoning (although the claim *IS* incorrect).

McCain was 31 when MLK was killed and he was in a POW camp at the time. Do you have any information to back up anything else you said?

can you elaborate? I am saying adoption does not grant someone "non-bigot for life" status

Hmmm....voting against making a federal holiday (for which he could have had a myriad of reasons for doing so) vs. ADOPTING a dark skinned girl. Bigots don't typically tend to do that, nor is ADOPTING a kid something you do to win political favor. You're trying to make it sound like by adopting her he's saying "It's ok, I have black friends".

No, I think that is what you are saying

Why else would you make a point of it?

I've met black mothers who have said "at least you aren't hispanic" it is possible to be non bigoted about whites and blacks...but then be bigoted about others

I think John McCain has proven he is not a bigot about south asian children, that is ALL he has proven

Sullen expression, clear delineation from the rest of the group, leaning away from "family", looks like mom is leaning away from him, holding a stick from a sport that requires a mask, sister is holding her stomach from probable beating with the stick............he's got Jason Voorhees v2 written all over him.

:edit: If racist people want to believe I said that because she's black, so be it. What I said was, and what I'll say again is, those are some pretty damned white sneakers. Read "racism" into that if you want.......it just tips your hand

i think it's a pretty effective commercial... and we're just beginning to scratch the surface when it comes to these kinds of ads. i'd sure like to see what kind of ads the gop comes up with... especially anti-obama ads.

Yeah, that's only the start. Every time McCain panders to the still pro-Bush crowd, he hurts his chances with the overwhelming majority of the nation that feels like we're on the wrong track and need a change.

McCain can't represent that change as long as he's linked with the Bush legacy, which he certainly is.
