I don't really know about the particulars of his vote, but why would it be bigoted to vote against a holiday? So if you oppose MLK day you are automatically a bigot?

Trying to get the black vote probably. Kinda sad. In any event his vote 20+ years ago wasn't bigoted. I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to observe MLK day and receive my mail. We need less federal holidays if you ask me.

Yep. Just good ol' fashioned pandering. Kinda sad? More like downright pathetic!

We should get rid of the 4th of july as a holiday, a bunch of racist clowns in whigs being total cowards about slavery, and we celebrate that?

What a backwards holiday

Also, no one should get time any time for christmas, its a pagan holiday, and "Thanksgiving" is a particularly disgusting holiday...the Adams Family II does a nice little slap on that one

Regardless of what holidays are named, it doesn't change my position. I never said I wanted to get rid of all Federal holidays, just that we have too many, and I don't think someone voting against MLK Day is a bigot or a racist. In fact, I find that argument absolutely absurd. Just because someone disagrees on a position, doesn't mean they're racist or bigoted.

I don't necessarily think we need a federal holiday for Abe Lincoln's birthday. I wouldn't think a politician voting against it would be racist or want to bring back slavery or whatever absurd accusation that can be drawn from it. People should be free to speak their honest and mature opinions without people on the fringes crying racism to such absurd degrees. There is absolutely nothing wrong with opposing a federal holiday for Abe Lincoln, George Washington, Marting Luther King Jr, Ghandi, Jesus, Malcom X, etc. It's just not the case. Support for federal holidays and racism simply aren't linked.

I don't think we should have a Federal Holiday for Hanukkah, I am not anti-semitic. I don't think the mail should stop for Kwanzaa, I am not racist. I think stereotyping and pre-judging people who disagree as being racist or bigoted is inherently flawed.

McCain at this pace has no chance at beating Obama. Billary on the other-hand, the Conservatives hate them so much that they'll vote for McCrazy any day of the year.

You could have some respect even if you would never vote for the man.

Instead you think this moment is cute and funny. I would rather have all such like minded people in the other party even if we lose each and every election!

it is cute and funny... if you can't see through his blatant pandering and obvious lack of sincerity, you've got a little problem there

His post didn't mention one way or the other about McCain's statements, it was more focused on the tone of the post. I also believe it was pretty out of line and pretty ignorant to insinuate bigotry over his vote.

It is pandering, but you are a moron if you think voting against the MLK Holiday makes you a bigot.

He could have given his reasons and that would have been fine. He might even be sorry now he didn't vote for it and that is legitimate.

I would say bigoted would have been voting against civil rights legislation, but Al Gores father isn't running for President.

And do tell, what evidence besides voting against the MLK holiday do you have that John McCain is a bigot.

Please, do share. I'd love to see.

He's hired people who did the Harold Ford race-baiting ads...he's called asians gooks without clearly pointing to Vietnamese "enemies"...He countered Ron Paul's argument on free trade with Arabs by saying all they want is burkas...he personally accepted the endorsement of Reverend John Hagee who is close to the campaign, and is very very anti-catholic to a hateful level

thats just off the top of my head

Not at all. No need to project the total lack of honesty and character of some of your top candidates onto McCain. Someone who I still disagree with on a number of important issues, but who has a well earned reputation for honesty and frankness that often gets him into trouble. That is a rather cynical point of view and I will not take part in it. Nihilism is not a universal quality.

And it is not my problem.

Wow, great post Thorgrim. But McCain has said this garbage before and if you don't think voting against the MLK holiday is not only a mistake but kind of a scratch your head "what?" kind of moment. You're delusional. MLK is one of the most important figures in American history and a very important man to the black community. If we honor Columbus Day (and he was a rat-bastard who raped and pillaged many Indian villages) and not MLK Day, that's wrong.

I think you are awesome RMNIXON, but I believe you're completely wrong in this aspect of the issue. McCain heart is in the right place at most times, but he still has a mean streak inside of him and is a very stubborn man who, if-elected needs to surround himself with a good cabinet. Otherwise, I will be scared for our communities.
