Econ homies: Finance Group Interview on Tuesday

Hey all,

So I have a phone interview with a panel of VP's from the M&T Bank Finance Group on Tuesday afternoon. Since this was my first choice for a summer internship given that I'm being forced to return to Buffalo by my parents, I'm a bit nervous and really hoping that I can get it. Solid resume builder, good pay, and a good summer job.

However, Economics major or not, this is the first Finance-specific position I've ever interviewed for. Given that it's a phone conference and I don't really have the chance to impress the interviewers in person, I want to make sure that my answers to their questions are spot-on. Since I can have some notes in front of me, and intend to prepare for the interview, I was trying to brainstorm what sort of questions I might be asked. I have a list of standard stuff from Vault and Wharton Career Services, along with the guideline for a STAR interview.

So here's the question: Any of you who do or have worked in this industry, what should I be expecting? Any curveballs I can expect? Tips? Pointers? I've talked to some of my contacts, but I really want this job and am looking for whatever help I can get.

Thanks!

Who are you interviewing with?

I work at M&T. If you know who or where you are interviewing I am be able to shed some light.

Not being there in person does take away some of that valuable first impression. However, having notes is a good plus. I am the type of person who often has good things to say, but when you get nervous you forget most of it. Have some very general notes. Don't script your answers because they will catch on quick! Sometimes even a few keywords if a type of question should come up is enough to jog your memory and then you can phrase you answer like you are thinking on the spot. Remember that they don't expect you to know everything or they would offer you the M&T Chief Executive position!

Good Luck!

if I was you I would write 5 general things that you want to get across about yourself on a postcard, just one or two words to jog your memory.

Yea, I know stuff like this and have it planned out.

I was hoping to catch some specific stuff, but I guess no one around here really fits the bill. Oh well.

You should also keep in mind that the interviewers may ask you an area that you need to improve. A sort of self reflection type answer, have something prepared.

Also, if it is a phone interview I agree have a few notes handy.

Also, it helps if you have a few good questions to throw their way. Perhaps about their future expansion or potential acquisitions? I dont know anything about this company so I'm just trying to give you a few ideas.
