I personally think there are more than enough laws on the books that deal with these issues. The problem is, we aren't tossing these people in jails long enough to punish them (nor are jails actually working). Either judges give jokes for sentences or these people get out to early due to probation.
Okay I'm sold, let's raise taxes for more anti-gun police and more jails for gun offenders

Does that mean the average civilian can do it? Anecdotal stories mean nothing.

If I was in charge you would go to jail for much longer if you use a gun in a crime (such as drug dealing) then you would if you are a drug dealer, for instance.

Shift funds from the DEA to the ATF

as a deer hunter, the least important part to me is getting a deer. For me it is time to spend some "unconnected" time with my family and nature. Cell phones are a no go, its is a time to relax and reflect. When I get into my tree stand I carry my shotgun and usually a philosphy book. I read for awhile and then take a nap, and maybe a deer will come maybe it won't.

Same old arguments. There are no "solutions" only things that make one side or the other happy. Banning guns makes the liberals happy...giving guns to everyone makes the conservatives happy. Neither are a solution to the problem.

his arguments are the best.

Lets mandate Universal Health Care and find the money for that.

But we can't afford to process criminals, so lets do away with the 2nd amendment.

Off topic, but maybe if we didn't fill our jails with people who are only guilty of using drugs we would have enough room to keep the scumbags in for their full time.
I can agree with that. I'd rather let all the drug users who did nothing more than have drugs on them out (keep ones that committed actual crimes in) and fine them. Let the hard criminals stay in the pen for as long as needed.

For the people who don't believe Americans should have the right to have a loaded firearm in their home I have a question.

I'll paint the scenario:
Let's pretend you live alone and own a firearm. You wake up in the middle of the night to a strange man standing at your bedroom door holding a knife. A genie pops up and says you have two options of what's going to be on your night stand. A loaded gun or a telephone to call the police. Which do you want? Anyone who says they'd prefer not to have a loaded gun would be lying to themselves.

Why do we need all this excessive regulation. I can understand laws regarding having minors in the household and all that jazz, but gun control has typically gotten too far to the left. It needs to be toned down some, but the trends have been to move further and further to the left until you essentially end up with a DC ban.

It's pretty silly, why should someone be prevented from ordering twenty AR-15 for his group of friends, who like him have have mental disorders, have a medical condition that would make them unfit to even serve in Iraq, and have a background of pulling knives/assaulting people that didn't rise to the level of a felony

My fucking christ some people are insane about how far "gun rights" go
We're insane? You're insane. You think someone can just go out in the United States and buy 20 AK-47's? They can't.

We have a very good background check system, which is why all firearms need to be legal and not regulated so the government can keep track of who are purchasing said items.

Personally, I keep firearms in my safe. But as a poster said earlier, during a home invasion, you would think differently. Criminals with the intent to harm someone need to be dealt with accordingly and citizens can't always wait for the police.

I would much rather know that I have a firearm, ready to use to protect my family or friends then being helpless to criminals who do have weapons and can dictate what they want to do with us.

But then again, Thorgrim. I doubt you've ever had to deal with robbery. At least the person who started the thread is being a realist about gun control.

my solution is to get rid of the drug laws of this country and focus more on illegal guns.

The city I currently live in, Rochester, NY, is one of the toughest when it comes to convicted felons and illegal firearms, because they get them sentenced to 5 years in prison

In my book it would be a 20-25 year sentence.

The Brady Group should be going after harsher punishments for criminals who use guns in violent acts. they should be pushing for judges to throw down harsher sentences and imposing them instead of trying to ban the law abiding from owning firearms.

But they are totalitarian idiots, so I don't expect them to grasp this concept. I am all for throwing the book at people who use guns in crime. I want violent people behind bars. Saying I can't own a gun because a criminal might use a gun in a crime is fucking retarded.
I just have to ask this question, hsmith. Are you sure you're a Socialist? Or are you a socialist that I don't understand. Because everything I've read about Socialism does not seem like you. Unless, I'm missing a joke or something?

^How my place I stay at is built, they have to come up the stairs. Plenty of time to know and we all have locks on our bedroom doors. I live in a nice neighborhood, so crime isn't really on my radar. It's a worst-case scenario situation. I have a bat under my bed. I don't know what my other roomies do with there weapons but we're not really concerned with getting robbed. It's more for the just in-case "L.A. Riots v2.0" started to happen.

not really, camping is different from hunting. You would have to experience to understand the difference.

Who cares if people are hunting? As long as they're eating the meat? I hate people that try to argue this garbage. If you eat meat, you have no right to say anything, what meat processing plants do to animals is far worse than hunting. I support hunters and they have very strict regulations. My cousin in Oregon hunts and after he kills a deer, that's it. You're not allowed to hunt anymore or you face strict fines. They just don't let you go killing every animal you see. Most people hunt so they can provide food for there family and it's a much cheaper alternative than going to the grocery store. This message board makes me want to distance myself from the left more and more. You guys have no common sense. You think the world can just be changed with the snap of a finger and it can't. Wake up.
