Treasury: Federal Deficit Down 14.1 Pct.

WASHINGTON — The federal budget deficit, helped by a surge in government revenue, is running 14.1 percent below the pace of last year, the government reported Wednesday.

The Treasury Department said that with just one month to go in the budget year, the deficit totals $304.3 billion, down from $354.1 billion during the same period a year ago.

thought i'd try to add a little sunshine to all this doom and gloom consuming these forums. does nobody care about anything good in this country anymore?

You sure this isn't a case of choosing to "not count" certain debts, like they have with deaths in Iraq?

It's great that it's down. But it's still big.

the numbers are so astronomical (and people care so little) that they overinflate them, and then when their over-inflations turn out not to be true, they claim victory

its a ploy for suckers

It's always a ploy with you, heaven forbid the economy actually do well...

This is the second time the treasury has brought this up this year, the problem I have is the deficit is still outrageous and unacceptable IMO. We need to cut some spending and do it now. Next year we'll close the gap a little more but its probably not going to be erased for another 3 or so years. Not acceptable IMO.

What happens if you include the so called "emergency spending bills" they they use for Iraq, as if it was somehow a surprise that we were at war and needed money.

Oh my god, it's an emergency! we are at war.. we need more spending!

Yup, Iraq and afghanistan, along with katrina stuff, and a variety of other things are not included in their figures. Ive heard things like when our deficit was 400 billion it was actually closer to 700 billion. They hide a ton of things, and is partially why a lot of people think clinton never really had a surplus.

I'd like to see FULLY DISCLOSED spending/earning figures, including ALL spending, before I pass judgment... But if this "core deficit" is down, that's a good start.

Eh, kinda. When nobody will loan them money anymore, they can only print more with no value, which is hyperinflation... basically economic ruin and bankruptcy USSR style

Deficit down is good, but not when it is only because they happened to get more money in then planned.

We are still spending ~300-400 billion more then we have available

Not many people who subscribe to modern political party would hope to have the system break down and rebuilt through a modern "constitutional convention". But I guess you're right, it's pure speculation on my part. I sincerely apologize for insinuating.

thanks

the issue is federalism, essential state representation at the federal level

we currently have none and no prospect of putting it back, for the Senators would never vote themselves out of their job

the original system broke down, time to put it back together with bigger safeguards
