| And the GOP Congress already starts with the racism "I'm going to tell you something: That boy's finger does not need to be on the button." -- Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY) on Barack Obama Oh 'boy'... - First Read - msnbc.com Really, like a man in politics for how long, in the south, doesn't know what it means to call a fully developed 46 year old black person "boy" I don't think there is much to discuss, I just want to hear some people try to say it wasn't meant in a racist way | ||||

| Meh, I don't take it as racism, but I don't look for racism in every comment either. Poorly worded, I'll give you that for sure, though. And I'm not defending the Republican from Kentucky. He actually looks kind of inbred to me on his site | ||||

He's from the south, he's the same age of Barack, he has blacks in his district he appeals to...he knows of the urban environment of the US...he well knows how politicians handle things like calling blacks "boy" There is absolutely no excuse and it's a CLEAR sign of racism, thankfully being in the minority in the house leaves him with basically no power until he gets voted out eventually (it is a tossup district if I remember correctly...but it is Kentucky so I don't know if there are enough whites who care...or blacks) | ||||

| Excuse me but "boy" is a slang-term used in the South. I was born in Houston, TX only stayed for a year as a baby and have a Grandma who still lives there. My Dad lives in North Carolina and they use that same term "boy" to communicate with anyone whether it's friendly or aggressive. They say it to any man, a man of younger age, white, black, mexican, or children. It's slang. Like how I say "bro", "homie", "dog", "fool" and other Southern California slang. When I opened the topic I thought I was going to read something crazy and it's all about him saying "boy"? Are you kidding me? It's southern slang. I'm really at shock with this topic. Grow up. Next I can't call Hillary Clinton a big fat whore, making me sexist. 1st Amendment! | ||||

| I dunno man... It's kinda weak. You make an assumption on his meaning based on your stereotypes about where he is from. It could be that dude is a racist idiot, but I'd need more evidence than this ONE statement to say "he hates Obama b/c he's black!" I'm not defending him or the statement, I just think it's a conclusion that may be jumped to prematurely unless you can offer more from his past showing a pattern. All you've offered us is a SINGLE statement with no prior context about this guy. Really, you of all people should know better. You're not new to the internet or forums. | ||||

| for me it really depends how he said the word boy. if he pronounced it without really saying the "y" at the end, then i can see how it could be racist. i grew up in the south too and you can hear plenty of that around, but generally anyone that was younger than you, you could call boy too, as in slang..... basically if it was said with hatred, it probably was racist. if it was just said casually then i doubt it was. context people, context.

| Shit, in my experience, EVERYONE is boy in the South. HoA told my mom "Boy, you better mow your lawn." Ok, not THAT bad, but seriously. Hasn't anyone ever watched King of the Hill? lol. It REALLY depends on context, of which we have none in this thread. | ||||
