Digsby

Dumpy turned me on to this awhile back, but I wanted to share it with the rest of you guys

Digsby = IM + Email + Social Networks

It's a Trillian style application that can also handle email and social networks like facebook. It doesn't do IRC, but I can't stand IRCing from anything but a specific client anyway, so that's not a huge deal to me.

It's in beta right now (no longer private), and the next updates are going to be focused on increasing performance, reducing memory footprint, etc

It's really a great app.. I really like the pop up message features, I can respond to an IM without having to completely tab over, I know when I get a new email, etc..

Here's a pic of that:

Anyway, figured I'd share the wealth

I love that you can add cell phone numbers to your contact list, and you can SMS people directly from Digsby, and they can respond to you as well (unlike services like Teleflip). That's really neat when it comes to sending an address, phone number, directions, etcetera.

I absolutely hate it when something pops up over what I'm doing. I had to use tweakui to disable focus changes, in fact.

If I used this and you IM'd me, you'd end up with an accidental reply that looked something like this, every time:

"get { return _batchCom god damnit"

I'm not a fan of pop-ups either, but I assume you can turn it off. The link to the myspace and facebook will definitely make it trendy though. The interface looks pleasant and clever. I have a feeling it'll be a hit with the myspace/facebook fans.

How is its memory footprint?

You can disable popups. It also has a neat feature that I don't see elsewhere, and that is the ability to disable popups when something is making use of the full screen (e.g., a game or a movie), but display them otherwise.

The reason I started using it was because it notifies you of updates on MySpace, Facebook, and your email. Now I don't have to log into any of that crap unless I actually have something there worth looking at.

How is its memory footprint?
Memory footprint is terrible right now (~60-80 MB). But one of the developers has told me that he guarantees they will take care of that. They're not in a hurry to optimize it yet for two reasons: (1) Everyone has sufficient RAM these days to handle an 80 MB application, and (2) They want to take care of all other bugs and get the client completely stable first. The former justifies the latter. But (2) is almost taken care of, so there is no reason for them not to start optimizing once it's done.

As motz said, optimization will be within the next few updates.

wise:

It doesn't automatically switch the focus from what you were doing to the pop up window.. ie: right now I'm typing in the quick reply box, someone IM'd me, I can see the message and click on it to reply if I want, but if I want to keep typing here, it doesn't prevent me from doing so or make me re-click on the quick reply box

So you can keep doing what you were doing, but see what someone sent you without having to tab over completely

The text messaging client seems pretty nifty and tredny too, but I don't text very often. The ability to send e-mail directly through it seems useful though. If they incorporate compatible video chat with the major IM systems I may think about giving it a try. As of right now it just seems kinda bloated and overbearing.

Yea, beta is usually pretty memory intensive and I don't mind that, do they have a target goal to get it down to?

I'm not sure. I haven't been too concerned with it.

Everyone has at least a gig of ram these days, usually more.. I don't think it's bloated really, except for the memory footprint, which isn't a big deal

All of the features it has are useful and aren't turned on unless you turn it on yourself

Yeah, everything is modular, which is awesome. Even if you have them turned on, they don't get put into memory until you activate them. You can tell by watching the difference between having a chat window opened, and having all chat windows closed. Once you open a chat window, you see about 15MB go to use. It's not that each window uses 15MB, but rather, that the module that controls the window and establishes the whole chatting mechanism uses 15MB. Each additional window you add doesn't increase memory usage. Once all windows are closed, the module is no longer in use, and it is unloaded from memory.
