If they want to do it without getting married, great. But when they decide to marry they decide to break the law and open themselves up to that being used as grounds for a warrant.
There's an interesting question. How exactly does one go about becoming a polygamist? I mean, surely they can't just go down to the county and say "yeah I'll take 3 marriage licenses plz" ... I realize they might be able to get around it by going to multiple counties, but why would they do that knowing it's illegal?

Is it also illegal to go through the religious ceremony of being married while being married? Does the law differentiate between the two?

I don't think your speeding analogy really fits very well

Why should getting married change anything? Are we talking legal marriage or just the symbolic ceremony, etc?

I do. It's a law and they're breaking it. Just because you disagree with the law doesn't mean it shouldn't be enforced. If they want plural marriage they should be out there pushing for candidates/laws to support that, not ignoring the law and expecting nobody will care.

Ehh, realistically, it will not ever happen for them, although it might be an opportunity for an unlikely alliance between gays and FLDS

Again though, I'd be very interested to know what the law actually is...
