| It's time to grow stuff! Is anyone else lookin forward to getting thier hands in the dirt or is it just me? May 1st is the date around here that I start putting my garden together. I'm not sure what I want to do this year. I am thinking a few tomatos, maybe 3. I grew 5 last year and it was too many. Then the obligatory Basil plant. Probably 2 of them. AGain I grew 4 last year and it was too much I also am going to try my hand at roses. I guess they can be finnicky and need a fair amount of care but we'll see how it goes. I am planting these cool climbing roses called "Candyland". They are supposed to look like this: ![]() I planted 4 of them along a fence in my back yard. They actually arrived as bare root plants this morning at about 7:45 AM just as I was getting ready to head off to work... so I had to frantically go and put them in the ground. You can't leave bare root plants out of the ground for long or they will dry up and die. They all came in one box and they looked something like this: They should grow eventually to something like 10 feet high but they will need to be supported to do so. I'm pretty excited about these. I can't wait to see how they turn out. Hoepfully I don't kill them! | ||||

| The first thing I thought about when I saw this title was marijuana for some reason Living in an apartment I don't really have room to grow stuff, I suppose I could get some of those long box things, but meh.. I would probably avoid flowery things if I had a yard, I don't like all the stinging insects they attract | ||||

Oh I almost forgot, I also planted a blueberry bush and a rasberry plant( vine? ) , but they won't develop any fruit for a couple of years.

next year though............everything will be established, the irrigation will be going full blast, and the garden (hopefully) will be overflowing with produce. I will get to do a lot of landscaping this year though. Shrubs, flowers, all that shit. Can't wait.

| I have always had a little farmer in me. I think I would have been happy being a farmer like my grandfather who I visited a couple of weeks every summer when younger. I am afraid that I swam, fished in his little creek, and rode horses and climbed hills more than help him with his work, but I did help some and hauled in his hay one year with my cousin while he was away to surprise him. I used to do the big garden thing making mistakes like planting to many zuccini plants. We could have feed the whole town with all the zuccini"s we had that year. Now that we live in Texas the soil is not so good and with too many kids and not enough time or lazyness I no longer garden, but my wife is crazy for plants the inside and outside of my house is full of them all year round. She really has a green thumb. We seem to have flowers blooming just about the whole year in front of our house and pots all around our patio. I have to admit I enjoy them a lot but I don't have to do much of the work. I do tote the bags of soil she buys around for her, but she wouldn't even let me touch one of her pots. | ||||

| I feel like I just walked into a gay bar by mistake .Actually, a friend of mine had a nice garden once....until he was arrested. Apparently, the cops frown on people growing 30 pot plants 7 feet tall. | ||||

| I don't know why there is this thing with gardening and landscaping that it's a feminine thing. My wife hates dirt and woudln't know a hydrangea from a hole in the ground. I actually find it relaxing. When I get home from work I like to walk around the yard and check on everything, pull up a few weeds, look and see what is coming up, that sort of thing. | ||||

If you're growing food, just tell everyone you're farming. Much more masculine connotation with that word!

| My Summer Farm has Corn, Zucchini, 3 Bell Pepper Plants, a new thyme plant, some massive sunflowers (with seeds!) and I have another little patch to put something in, I might go tomorrow to check out some plants. I don't know if anyone remembers my tomato plants from last year http://http://www.libertylounge.net/forums/17159-so-do-you-guys-do-any-2.html , but they are still going strong, and now that winter is over, they are bustin' with little green babies. I've had to string them up because they would take over the entire little thingy their in. I've also been composting this entire winter. The dirt is awesome with worms. We just got preapproved, so looking at lot size will be a HUGE consideration. I might have to sacrifice a bedroom for it. I | ||||
