I think given the circumstances there's nothing wrong or hypocritical or out of the ordinary about this scenario.

To further expand on what I think you're alluding to, it's not like Obama is this industrial entrepreneur who created a company which in turn employed people adding to the economy. He wrote a book. And as I said earlier, McCain isn't unjustly accepting handouts, he's earned it.

That's "not trying to say anything"? I'd hate to see what you're like when you're trying to make a point

Nope.

Just finding it curious that, for as many times as you've said "I'm not trying to say/accuse/suggest/attack......" everyone else who's posted in this thread either agrees that you're trying to say/accuse/suggest/attack or is confused by the apparent conflict between your words and your implication.

Some people who work for the government actually DO have very important jobs, and deserve to get paid well for what they do.

My mom, for instance, makes around $115K/year and has all kinds of cool shit (Jeep, guns, laptop, blackberry, oak office furniture, desktop, really bad-ass sunglasses, etc) but brought back in over $300 million in defrauded Medicare and Medicaid money in 2007

Are you trying to suggest that anyone (like Obama) who is for what he sees as reasonable regulation on business, the economy, etc.. isn't able to turn a profit without being called a hypocrite?

I don't buy into that at all personally.

I also don't really see any conflict with McCain either, though I think if someone doesn't NEED social security, it should probably be left in the pot for everyone else who DOES need it to collect.. that seems to be the point of the system, and leaving it in there would help deal with the issues we're facing now

If someone ever went broke or whatever, they could start collecting payments or whatever.

funny you should ask.

She might actually be leaving active duty in the next few months to take a teaching position at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in St. Simon's Island, Georgia. Quite a move from Buffalo I wouldn't mind calling a place where it's 75 degrees in the winter home, however

You're right, though--the government, being the ultimate job security, has a lot of employees who, after making a name for themselves and rising rapidly in their first 10 years, settle in to a cushy position and don't work very hard anymore. I know some agents who barely work 30 hours a week in the office, but still get paid a full-time salary because they're "working at home."

Oh I know I'm right about that, I used to work at the port of seattle, and it may not be federal, but that probably just makes it lazier I bailed on that asap

$58,358 - Navy pension
$23,157 - Social security income

This doesn't add up to $258k because there were other investments that made him money as well, I guess. MSNBC reported these numbers.

Barack Obama made 4.2 million dollars last year. His books accounted for about 4 million dollars of that, and presumably he's making the same amount from his salary that John McCain is.

This made me ask a few things.

First off, McCain is ranked among the wealthiest senators in the senate. Why is he collecting social security? Does anyone know the answer to that? I'm not accusing him of anything there, merely raising the question. I'm also not suggesting that he's not entitled to it, given that he must have paid in.

Second, Barack Obama, the guy who's supposedly more against private enterprise, used private enterprise to make a SHITLOAD more money than McCain. The vast majority of McCain's income comes from the government. I am not suggesting he shouldn't accept his Navy pension - he certainly earned it given the circumstances, but I do begin to see a pattern here, especially since McCain is also using federal funds for his presidential run - to the tune of about $85 million dollars.
Some more food for thought, McCain has given each senate raise he's gotten since 1991 to charity. He does this each YEAR. Thats more than 450,000 dollars he's given to charity in increased senator salary because he voted against them.
