assuming your party members will just follow along with whatever you tell them to do is a surefire way of losing. The silent majority rejects liberals and liberalism, I would refer you back to 1968, again. I really think that we are going to see history happen again.

Maybe I am (in fact, I probably am--I've never lived outside a city and haven't really spent any extended time in small towns). However, blue-collar (primarily unionized) works in rust-belt areas are as traditionally democratic as you come. It would be difficult, I think, for McCain to swipe those votes away from Obama--especially with Obama promising them tax breaks, cheap healthcare, and assistance with their housing problems, whereas McCain will offer none of the above.

I just can't agree with that. I really think Obama, if this is over in the next few weeks, will win--and all the "racist Silent Majority" talk will be exposed for what it really is-racist.

At least, I like to hope so. Perhaps being a progressively-minded person living in the most progressive area of the country save San Francisco, my views on the American public might be somewhat off.

exactly, call them racist if that makes you feel better but they run this country.

And they are primarily conservatives.

You act as if defecting to McCain is their only option. It's also very possible that they just stay at home. But trust me, there are plenty of buttons that can and will be pushed with these people that will make them extremely squeamish to vote for Obama. Gun control, reverend Wright, etc. and so forth. And again, I don't think you really have a grasp on the kind of racism that's really out there. And to be honest, it's not even so much racism as it is just plain ignorance from lack of socialization. I've been to places in WV, PA and NC who have never seen a minority outside of their television.

The rest of the country isn't nearly as progressive as the populist centers like NY, Philly, LA and Chicago would lead you to believe.

exactly what do you mean by "progressive"?

because between saying you're progessive and throwing San Fran as an example and admitting you've never lived outside a city and hardly ever even spent any time outside a city, I'd say your views could be WAY off.

I wouldn't say they're primarily conservative. In the bible belt, yeah, but in places like WV, OH, etc. where unions are big business, I'd say they lean towards the democrats because they pander to that base. Not to mention a lot are also receiving govt. assistance.

Could be.

I tend to hate small towns and the small-town way of life

We haven't had a good round of riots since the Rodney King riots in 1992. It's high time we had some more.

From a social standpoint, though, they're certainly conservative.

conservative not in the sense of conservative republican but conservative in values.

There is a big difference between union democrats and latte democrats.

I'm not saying anything is set in stone, I'm just throwing this info out there.

I've spent a lot of different times in my life with a lot of different socio-economic groups. I grew up in what is now touted as "the number one city with the largest affluent African-American suburb". Not nearly as glorious as it sounds Then when I was a teenager we moved to Annapolis where I went to High School. Really snobby area (kind of odd, a good deal of the people I saw were conservatives, but there was no shortage of liberals either), so I spent a lot of time in the summer with my brother out in western Maryland which was a big coal town; lots of union people, not many of them very wealthy. His wife had family in WV so I spent a good amount of time there too. Then I went to an art college in the south. Now I live on the eastern shore of MD near Delaware which is more or less a farming community. So I've run the gamut in first hand experience with a good deal of the different voting pools, and actually one that I've spent the least amount of time with is the Bible Belt conservatives....but I'm starting to see a bit of it now in Delaware (although DE isn't bible belt, still right wing religious nuts).

While I object to being called a "latte democrat," the point holds as true.
