WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to recommend Gen. David Petraeus, the four-star general who has been leading troops in Iraq, to become the next commander of U.S. Central Command.

If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace Navy Adm. William Fallon, who stepped down in March.

Taking Gen. Petraeus's position as the senior commander in Iraq would be Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, who had until recently been serving as Gen. Petraeus's deputy.

A very smart pick, I am glad that he won't be leaving the region but rather assuming a larger command of both Iraq, Afghanistan operations as well the Middle East, East Africa and Central Asia. This is the top job in the military as far commanding positions go.

I also like the idea of promoting one of Petraeus's staff members to his former billet, Petraeus assembled the best staff for his counter-insurgency plans.

There was talk that bush had to get him to a new position in case the dems took office. I guess it happened sooner than later.

The man is a proven liar, he knew the Shia clergy wouldn't dare get involved in militia politics, but he the decision was up in the air and they might tell him to disband the Mahdia Army

Yet he lied and continually said that Iran was some how ramping up the Mahdi army for fights, essentially dislodging the Maliki-Badr Alliance WHICH IRAN WANTS TO WIN...he even claimed that Iran might be running the Mahdi army...which is working against Iran's goals

It also appears he directly lied in Congress in his well-prepared reports it took months to assemble: Daily Kos: Petraeus admits he misled Congress

I can't even mention all the times he refused to give honest answers, like about the Basra battle, desertion rates, status of Sunni awakening council...etc etc


And his replacement is as much a GOP minion as he is...so the military loses big time

Military > Politics...at least thats how it used to be...too bad it's changed, if you salute GOP talking points, that's how you get promoted
