Israel 'ready to return Golan' Returning the Golan Heights to Syria is not a popular concept in Israel Israel has passed a message to Syria that it would withdraw from the Golan Heights in return for peace, according to a Syrian government minister. | Israel 'ready to return Golan'
So, is it possible Carter's visit to the region might actually lead to the resolution of peace between Israel and Syria, or is this just a coincidence? Obviously the article talks about secret talks dating back to 2007, but could his recent visit have helped push things along? Despite the negative feelings some have about him here in the US (mostly conservatives, I think), I think opinions of him are still good abroad, and he has a history of working on issues like this. Either way, I feel like this is a good idea. Israel has to also take some steps like this if it wants a lasting peace, seizing lands, while certainly a right of the victor after a war.. will not lead to a lasting peace or the cessation of hostilities when the other party feels you have something of theirs and is willing to continue to fight in whatever way they are able to in order to get it back. There has to be compromise on BOTH sides, this looks like a fantastic step in the right direction. | ||||

| This won't bring peace, it'll just set up their enemies to attack them yet again. Then they can take some more land | ||||

| Well really why should they? It's thier land now. Syria attacked them back in the 6 days war, anything Isreal managed to capture is thiers as far as I am concerned. They should no more have to return that land than we should have to return the whole of the US to the Native Americans or Texas and California to Mexico. With that being said, sometimes you need to do things that you shoudln't really have to to get what you want in the end. Maybe they have to give it back inorder to get something that they want in exchange. | ||||

| So Egypt shouldn't have gotten back the much larger and more important Sinai peninsula? This is basically the same deal, but it won't happen until Bush leaves office, the Syrians have been insulted by that GOP moron too many times to have his presidency be the one where some sort of peace talks start Syrian would only attack Israel if Iran and Israel start a war because of mutual agreements However, this peace treaty is different, it would settle 60+ years of an unresolved issues with Syria, it would be a huge win for both sides...as Syria is tired of the whole affair and Israel wants all it's neighbors to recognize it finally after all these decades Even if a new conflict broke you, you can't "un-recognize" someone, at least no one would take you seriously, the biggest issues would have been resolved and the new conflict would not result in any real gains by Syria...also it's not like they even have anymore land they want...if any country would want more, it's Jordan, but they are one of the most moderate arab countries... | ||||

| I think they should keep it and respond to any further attacks by taking more land, balanced against the fact that they can't get stretched too thin... | ||||

| Well the exact opposite worked very well in Egypt (they were more anti-israel than Syria)...so I don't see why they'd think that way... | ||||
