But, if you file and refuse to pay you will NOT go to jail. Eventually they'll go after your bank accounts and house and assets and garnish your wages but you will NOT go to jail if you file but don't pay.

Snipes didn't file. That's why he's going to jail. If he filed and didn't pay the millions then he would NOT go to jail.

How silly.

So what he didn't file? They still found out about it. How is you and I paying for him going to jail helping any situation at all? They can go after his shit without making us pay for it. Jail is expensive. Why send him to jail when they could just take his money plus penalties. Why SPEND money?

They need to take a page out of the book of the Credit Card Companies. Miss a payment? You get charged a penalty plus your interest rate goes up. The CC Comp is completely cool with you missing a payment because that's just more money for them. How retarded would it be if every time you missed a payment they spent unreasonable amounts of money punishing you over it? That would eat into the extra money they get in penalties.

The thing about the gov't is that they can ensure they get their money way easier than a CC company can.

whats the reasoning behind this? Just because it makes life harder at the IRS if they don't know how much you aren't paying them?

I don't know for sure, but common sense tells me if you file then you're at least admitting you know you owe (but may not have the money). If you don't file then they may think you're trying to get away with not paying.

If you don't file. The IRS will file for you. They will use whatever information they have and file it, with no deductions of course. Then they will estimate how much you owe.

It takes a LOT to go to jail for not filing or paying. They give you years of notices and options to pay. Snipes left the fucking country to get away from it and he should go to jail.

Hell, Willie Nelson owed something like $21 million and had no idea because he had accountants doing it. When the IRS finally got hold of him and put a lien on everything he owed he talked to them, they dropped the price of what he owed and gave him all his stuff back and allow him to make payments.

Snipes did everything wrong a person possibly could in his situation and he deserves what he gets.

The IRS can still get him without sending him to jail. He works in America. He owns stuff in America. Even if he left the country to escape their hounds, eventually money he uses has to pass through American banks or across American soil.

Sending him to jail accomplishes NOTHING. Not just nothing, but ABSOLUTELY nothing. They can get their money, add a bunch of penalties, or whatever else without sending him to jail so that we have to pay for his punishment.

Does that change the fact we're paying for him to go? If they JUST penalized him, then that's less we gotta pay in taxes.

I would say if federal income tax was illegal, we wouldn't be in this mess... But... 7960 would come raging in here to grab my hair and try to beat my face in for that comment... But that's in "Internet America".

I'd love to live in a world where everything I want to do is legal, and anytime I do break a law I can claim "that shouldn't be a law so you shouldn't punish me." Man, I'd make a bee-line for the nearest high school girls' locker room and rewrite some sodomy laws with one hand while I prep my junk with the other.

What's so wrong with changing or making new laws? They do it all the time in America.

As for ArdentFrost's comment...

Does that change the fact we're paying for him to go? If they JUST penalized him, then that's less we gotta pay in taxes.
I agree 100%, a man didn't pay for taxes, so we should have to pay taxes for him to go to jail? I hope you like your tax-dollars well spent.

I disagree with imprisonment in this case, jail should be reserved for those who are dangerous or those people where it will produce reform.

I like this particular subject because it's one that libertarians and democrats can generally agree on. I'm tired of all the economic discussions where I end up agreeing with conservatives. It makes me feel dirty to agree with one side more than the other
