I dunno, my experience is BMW's numbers are pretty accurate...if you look at MT and C&D numbers they also perform consistently better than others at meeting and exceeding EPA numbers

If you're only going to be putting kids back there, it's not going to matter.. but that's why I suggested the 5 series, it's a bigger car, more room, little less gas mileage (though nothing significant) and it certainly has a professional / successful appearance

Plus, you're right, they are very fun to drive.

As far as mileage, it's all about how you drive really, that goes for ANY car. Even your car would get shit mileage if you floor it every time you're leaving a stop light.

There's my current, I have 325 miles on this tank of gas so far with a mixture of city / highway driving, mostly city back and forth from campus

Sure, I was just saying the beamers kinda promote that style of driving simply b/c they're fun to drive. My dad used to have a 328 and I always loved driving that thing when I got the chance (which was rare). Additionally it was really comfortable for the driver and passenger, but not even for a teenager in the back seat.

3 series are definitely smaller and sportier than the 5 series, you don't usually see too many people with families driving a 3 series because that's not the target market really

Yeah, you usually see douchebag teenage boys from a well-to-do family driving them.

Or dudes going through a mid-life crisis, which is why my dad had one

I find it odd that the Maxima isn't professional enough. I also drive a 2002 maxima, mine's an SE with a 6MT (no auto) yet I always get comments about how quiet it is or how nice it is...some of this from some fairly high level managers with various energy/transportation companies. I think what it comes down to as you correctly pointed out your wfie simply doesn't like the car.

More professional? G35, BMW 3 Series or Lexus of some sort???
we were following a G35 the other day and she commented on how nice it looked.

I've got to check into reliability and all that shit but i was happily surprised she liked it. I've been a fan of that car for a while.

If you are looking for a car in that class with better than average fuel economy than the G35 is not the car for you. They get like 18-20 mpg from what I hear.

But it also gets worse mileage. 5 Series gets similar gas mileage to the other cars in the class the OP has defined.
