| Feed the Homeless, Go to JAIL ? SANTA ANA (5/8/08) - Members of a group threatened with citations if they continue feeding the homeless in a picnic area at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point will file a lawsuit today, claiming their constitutional religious and speech rights are being abridged. The lawsuit will be filed in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana by lawyers for the Orange County office of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, said the ACLU's Tessie Borden. Members of Welcome INN -- Interfaith Needs Network -- served meals at the state facility two days in a row in February. On the third day, they were approached by park rangers who said they were engaging in an unlawful assembly, Borden said. Is this happening in your area ? | Original Link: Feed the homeless, go to jail? - The Daily Breeze This is different than a picnic, this was the establishment of soup kitchen in a public park. Public parks are for recreation and enjoyment, not to provide social services. If the group wants to feed the homeless, then open up a soup kitchen that isn't located in a park and do so. | ||||

| Ah, the Daily Breeze... My local South Bay (a region of Los Angeles) newspaper. To me this subject is I don't really care that a bunch of over-paid families don't want homeless people around their kids. That's really what the situation comes down to, if they don't like it, take the kids to a different park. They're hundreds of different parks alone in the South Bay area to take your kids too. Hopefully the INN don't have to pay any fines and can just move to a church or whatever else was suggested. Stupid lawsuit that probably won't hold up in a California Superior Court. | ||||

| I live in this region, we consist of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Long Beach, San Pedro and Palos Verdes. The fact that a charity group wanted to hold a soup kitchen for the homeless is a good thing. Holding in a public park, ehh... They should have held this event at a church or other private area. But, allowing these people to sue is stupid. It's not like the soup kitchen was an epidemic going on everyday, it was one day. This has more to do with people thinking "dirty bums" shouldn't be fed in front of their children. But that's just my opinion. :P | ||||

| Oh what?! I had it all backwards! Then screw the Charity trying to make a buck off the state! So the family just complained to get them out of there. I thought they were trying to sue the charity too. God I hope the Charity doesn't win the case then, that'd be retarded. | ||||

| Sensationalist headlines...amazing... Hey lets set up a soupline wherever we want regardless of state/local laws that may prevent it. Next time they should set up shop out in front of the policy station, just make it easy...or at the court house in the employees parking lot | ||||

What a downer that would be. Once you lose your job, house, car, etc etc you should try and stay out of everyone else's way. Atleast if your gonna live on the street somewhere, chose a really poor area of town where people won't notice so much. | ||||
