Operation Sudden Fall: Inside the SDSU Drug Sting

YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

A new short film about the recent DEA drug bust at San Diego State University that resulted in almost 100 arrests, including students majoring in criminal justice and Homeland Security. The ongoing sting operation that lead to the arrests was a direct response to the death of SDSU student Shirley 'Jenny' Poliakoff from an overdose last year.

I wish I could be outside of Washington DC's monuments and other buildings from our past to the founder fathers, holding my pockets out of my jeans just asking everyone, "Where's my money gone? I can't seem to find it..."

Waste-less spending on crimes they cannot win, there is too big of a market for it and everyone pretty much doesn't give a shit if it doesn't effect them. Boo... Someday before I die, I will see America evolve a little bit to my understandings, at least I hope that happens.

No, THEY did that on their own. The idea that someone else screwed up their lives is moranic. I don't blame the cops for screwing up my driving record..... *I* was the one who sped and broke the law, *I* screwed it up all on my own.

/\ I agree, these kids new that participating in a complex drug ring was against the law, people get busted for drugs all the time it sucks, but they know what they're getting into.

That being said I strongly believe the drug laws (especially Marijuana laws) need to change. Its asinine to continue wasting resources trying to stop the use of a perfectly safe drug. I could on for a page or two on why I think pot should be legal. I personally think its the easiest call a legislator can make because the benefits of legalized marijuana so far out weigh the costs of its prohibition. The only thing that I feel is holding this country back is the blanket uniformed stigma of "Drugs are Bad". If anyone feels they have a strong argument of why Pot should remain illegal I'd love to hear it (though it would probably be appropriate to start a new post if that is the case)

Almost all the kids only had pot on them. What massive drug-ring was being arrested? For all I knew they just went in under the suspicion of taking down a couple drug-dealers (which is probably all they did a couple...). It's just a bad waste of tax-payers money, especially mine since I live in this state. We're very drug-tolerant as long as it doesn't have an affect on our lives. I read that story and thought it was stupid, way to ruin kids college education, especially if all they're doing is smoking weed.

Way to take all blame away from the people who actually broke the law.

Blaming this on the cops is ridiculous. 7960 hit the nail on the head.

Others are saying pot should be legal...well yeah I'd tend to agree with you that it *should be legal, but it is NOT legal. As a result if you get caught smoking it, distributing it or transporting it you have to face the legal consequences for your actions.

ding ding ding............ I *should* be allowed to go 139mph on the highway, but I'm not, so if I do who do I blame when I lose my license? some are saying it's the cops' fault. simply said, that argument is stupid.

Am I missing something? Who blamed it on the cops? It's the laws and the system that are the focus, the cops are just doing their jobs. However, an argument could be made that this isn't exactly the best use of the DEA and our tax dollars!

Tell the family of the student that died of an overdose that drugs on campus are harmless and hurt no one.

Why do these appeals to emotion only work when it's not a gun crime being discussed?

She didn't OD on marijuana, nobody does.

But suppose she did, people OD on aspirin everyday, should that be illegal? What about all the deaths caused by tobacco and alcohol, both perfectly legal recreational drugs? Why should one person who uses a substance irresponsibly ruin it for all of us that use it responsibly? I really don't see how anyone can justify tobacco an alcohol being legal while still insisting that marijuana use remain criminal.

Yeah that hippie lettuce really will make you o.d.... OR maybe she shouldn't have been doing heroin, meth, cocaine or pills (most likely one LEGAL drugs you can get from your pharmacy). It's still a waste of money to have a drug-sting at a college campus, especially when the majority of them only had weed as a drug for social settings and not selling. How many dealers did they get rid of 2...? Now you just made the people you didn't catch more powerful with no competition around. I really do not enjoy wasteful spending, but I'm not surprised this happened in San Diego, it's a really republican stronghold for that county.

BBC NEWS | Health | Overdose death rate cut
Aspirin overdoses accounted for about 5,000 hospital admissions annually and about 60 deaths.
Granted the article is about this number going down, but it still gets the point across, aspirin OD was a big enough problem to warrant passing legislation to deal with it.

And this (aspirin) is one of the most benign drugs out there.

It was stupid, but that does not mean the cops did the ethical thing though.

Did you watch the whole video? No one's saying they're harmless - they killed her.
