US Occupation jails AP photographer for 5 months and refuses to charge him

The U.S. military in Iraq has imprisoned an Associated Press photographer for five months, accusing him of being a security threat but never filing charges or permitting a public hearing.

...

Hussein is one of an estimated 14,000 people detained by the U.S. military worldwide — 13,000 of them in Iraq. They are held in limbo where few are ever charged with a specific crime or given a chance before any court or tribunal to argue for their freedom.

In Hussein's case, the military has not provided any concrete evidence to back up the vague allegations they have raised about him, Curley and other AP executives said.

What a sad and cruel system, detaining Iraqi citizens for months without charging them, and now we're trying to impose a court system which denies them the right to hear evidence or any reasonable method to defend themselves.

Their only defense is that he had "relationships" with people who were involved in militias...after almost 4 years of occupation and civil war is there ANYONE left in Iraqi that doesn't have some ties to a militia

Like Colin Powell said, this is getting to the point where we are losing our moral basis for conducting a war on terrorism

I don't know why more americans aren't disturbed by the fact we've set up a quasi-gulag network.

It's barely tolerable that the US is doing such in Iraq, because at least its an Iraqi court...but for us to be conducting ourselves like that...its outrageous and goes against every fair principle of common law this nation was founded upon

Whether or not this is legally permissible under some loophole is really beside the point.

This is the sort of thing we demonize past and present totalitarian regimes for, and now we're doing it ourselves. And the shallow rationalization for all this is that we're at "war," yet the "war" we're in cannot ever be won. Even worse than that is the excuse that our conditions are relatively pleasant in these prisons, as if being treated like a human is any consolation for being locked in a cage and having the key thrown away.

Dont need to reinterpret them. It allows us to put anyone captured on the battlefield into a camp for the duration of the war.

It's an occupation, you can't just treat their citizens like shit and throw people in jail on speculation and conjecture
