Never, never, never give up

On my way to work today.....

So this morning I am driving to a hospital about 2 hours away from home. I'm on a 4 lane divided highway that leads to Fort Bragg, NC. Not real busy but it's 7:45am so there is some work traffic on it. I see cars up ahead moving around what looks like a yellow blanket in the road, just to the right of the center lane of our side of the highway. I move to the right to go around it and it's a big yellow lab. And his head is up and he is looking at the cars going by him. I realize too late to stop but me and another guy make a u-turn a few hundred feet up the road and come back. I'm flashing my lights like crazy at oncoming traffic so they know to slow down so the dog doesn't get hit again. I watch about 15 cars go around him before me and the other guy pull over.

I walk to the dog and there is blood coming out of his mouth and ear. He has some road rash on his side and he just can't stand up. As I stoop down to look at him he wags his tail and tries to lick me. What a great fucking dog. He has a collar with a tag on it so I call the number. A lady answers and I say "Hi, do you have a dog named Brul?" She laughs and says "I did but it looks like he found you now!" Then I tell her that he's been hit by a car and is laying in the middle of hwy 87. She says "Oh shit, we'll be right there."

Ends up he ran out of the house when her son left for the school bus. They said he has done it a few other times and always runs 4 or 5 houses down to play with another dog that is in a fenced in yard. But when they went there they couldn't find him and they had looked for a while before they had to go back in to get their daughter ready for school.

The dog was only just over a year old but I think he is going to be ok. He was able to stand when we moved him off the road and I think the blood I saw was coming from his lip and some road rash in his ear.

Kinda sucked to have that first thing in the morning. And the more I think about the person who hit him not stopping and all those cars that passed without stopping just pisses me off to no end.

That really sucks.. but it's always nice to see people with a heart stop to do the right thing.

Personally, I don't understand how anyone wouldn't stop after hitting an animal like that.. I think you have to have something deeply wrong with you to feel like it's okay to ignore it.. especially when it could be someone's pet.

I wonder if they'll wind up putting him to sleep

Btw, you still working right off Bryan?

poor doggie. I swear Dogs are better than people sometimes. I can't believe people would just drive around him and keep on going.

I hope the don't have to put him to sleep. He was a puppy they got for their son last year. He was a sweet brave dog today.

Our office was off Bryan right by the airport but they pretty much closed it. They moved most of the admin jobs to Cary and only 2 VP's who live in GSO use it now until they can find a smaller place.

We had a going away party for the last admin people there a few months ago. One lady was the person responsible for me moving to NC 22 years ago. She was like a mom to me and my wife when we were first here. Nicest lady on earth. I stood to give a speach about her at our farewell lunch and I cried like a baby I didn't realize how much I was going to miss her until then.

I have had a pure bred Chow since it was a puppy. I used to live out in the country, and I would let her out and keep an eye on her. One day she was out and the phone rang. While I was talking on the phone, she wandered out into the highway. It had been raining and the road was wet. A guy hit her with his pickup truck, but he stopped and picked her up in his arms and carried her to my house. He was so sorry, but she was actually just badly bruised on her hind end. Because it was wet, his brakes locked up and he hit her but didn't roll over her...that's what saved her.
She was limping for a day or so and then she was fine.
Dogs are so resilient. She once jumped off an outside staircase because she was afraid of the landlord who was trying to pet her. She fell about 8 feet and injured a ligament in her leg. The vet said she would never walk again.
2 weeks later she was running around the yard. She is 14 years old now and still in good health.

That's great. Yeah, I still had the peoples number in my phone and I was considering calling to see how the puppy was. But I didn't know if they would think that was weird or what if it was hurt worse than I thought and they had to put it down. I'm just hoping everything turned out ok.

I'd say call, I don't think it's weird at all and I doubt they would either.

It might be better to keep thinking everything turned out okay, but at least you'd know one way or another.. and if they did have to put 'em down, I suspect they'll appreciate getting to say goodbye instead of having the dog die on the road all alone and in pain
