I used to give something like this as an extra credit question on my math tests:
A docked boat has a porthole 2'4" from the water's surface. If the tide is rising at 8" per half hour, how long will it be before the water reaches the bottom of the porthole?
You'd be surprised how many people (not just kids, ADULTS too!) got that wrong. I got phone calls from angry parents telling me their kid did the work right and should get the points. More than once I said one sentence that got them to just hang up the phone.
