if I'm going to forge a ticket that says joe why would I not forge an ID that says it, too?

Airliners are businesses. They are not running with this. The government is.

Why would you have to forge a ticket a ticket that says you are Joe. You would just have to have someone else buy the ticket. You swipe the CC, job done. I am not saying there aren't ways around it, but it seems an extremely logical security step to make sure the people getting on the plane were the ones listed on the ticket.

Right, but if you lose your ID or forget it, you can still board, onlt if you refuse to show it (something a terrorist wouldn't do, it draws attention)

Thats a silly argument, it implies the system is working. Thats like saying bag searches don't work because someone with a bomb in their bag wouldn't voluntarily submit to a bag search.

What? No it isn't. Your identity isn't a weapon, knowing who you are is really of little value.

If you want to compare it to bag-searching, which is not ideal, because it really isn't all that similar what they are doing is the following:

Searching every bag, and when they come to a locked bag if the person forgets the key, or lost it they say "oh well" but if they refuse to open the bag then they cannot fly. It is stupid.

It does if your name was screened when you bought the plane ticket and the TSA confirmed you were the same name on the ticket.

I don't see what the big deal is about an ID check at the airport. Most airports are pretty quick nowadays when it comes to getting you inside the gated terminals.

Situation A. Suspected terrorist purchases plane ticket and is detained for questions through screening ahead of time.

Situation B. Someone purchases ticket for the guy but is not allowed through security/is extensively searched because his ticket doesn't match his name.

Why is this such a strange concept?
