| Anyone have a Tempur-Pedic mattress? I'm going to need a new mattress soon and I've really been thinking about investing in one of these.. they have a 20 year warranty and the ones I've been on have been just amazingly comfortable and felt very good to my back The downside, is, of course, the initial price.. but if it can last 2 or 3 times longer than a traditional mattress (at least) without losing it's properties, and comes with a warranty guaranteeing it.. I dunno, seems like it might be worth it to pay more up front.. especially for an increase in comfort / support. If any of you have one, does it get really hot or anything like that? Anything you don't like? | ||||

| my wife had back surgery so we seriously considered buying one. she went out of her way to get a hotel room on a business trip that advertised they had that specific mattress. she slept on it 8 hours thinking she'd get the best night's sleep of her life and she was nearly disabled the next morning. it took her a few hours to get to where she could walk normally but she had pain for days. obviously we didn't get one. | ||||

| Really? Jeez.. Do you remember the hotel? I guess it'd be a cheap investment to spend a night somewhere with one to see how you sleep. I have one of their pillows, and I could tell a difference in the quality of sleep the first night, I slept so much better than I normally had.. so I am thinking the bed would just be that much better | ||||

| I work at Brookstone, a Sharper Image type store that also sells Tempur-pedic mattresses and pillows. I would buy a Tempur-pedic mattress in a New York minute, but I agree that you should try one out at a hotel first to make sure it's right for you. If you like the pillow, you should like the mattress. Personally I have a terrible time with getting too hot at night, but that's on regular mattresses. I've never slept on a tempur-pedic, but I would love to try one out. We sell adjustable beds too, and if I had the dough, that's the way I would go, no question. The basic pitch is that tests have shown they reduce tossing and turning up to 70 percent. On a regular mattress, your entire body weight is concentrated on a few points, and you toss and turn to relieve that pressure. With a tempur-pedic, your body sinks into the mattress, providing support all around the edges of your body, the parts that don't actually rest on the bed when you're on a regular mattress. That reduces your tossing and turning. We have tempur-pedic slippers too, and we used to have to wear them in the store during our shift. The slippers don't have a back part right behind the heel, and I've always hated those kind of slippers because my feet tend to slip out of them, but the tempur-pedic slippers were just fine, because your foot will sink into the material and hold it in place. Many times I left the store at the end of the day still wearing the slippers because I had forgotten I was even wearing them. I don't know about other stores, but Brookstone offers a 20 year warranty, 10 years covered and the next ten years pro-rated (anything goes wrong in year 11, you pay 10% of the cost of the mattress to replace it, year 12 you pay 20%, and so on until the warranty expires.) Also, if you don't like it, you can return it within 30 days of purchase (though there is a couple of hundred dollars restocking fee to discourage you from doing that.) You'll have to buy a completely flat foundation for it too, as a foundation with gaps will cause the mattress to sink through the gaps and void the warranty. The foundations are only a few hundred dollars, so it shouldn't be too expensive to get one. Another good thing is that you never need to flip the mattress either. Brookstone is offering some closeout prices on some mattresses right now because Tempur-pedic is introducing some newer models, so you might get a good deal. We also offer free shipping as well, and sometimes throw in a free pillow or two (up to 160 dollars worth of pillows I think, which would get you two of the thinnest, most basic neck pillow, or one really good one.) Here's a cool trick that we show customers too. Next time you're in a store looking at a Tempur-pedic mattress, toss your car keys on the bed and sit or lay on them. It's amazing and hard to believe, but you won't feel them at all! | ||||

| I have a hard time believing I'd be allowed to return a mattress at Brookstone when I was NOT allowed to return a pillow at Brookstone. | ||||

| You should be able to return a Tempur-pedic pillow to Brookstone within 30 days if you have the packaging and receipt. Any non-Tempur-pedic pillows and blankets and such, you can't return at all because it's a "personal care item" that touches your skin (and they should have told you when you purchased it.) No one wants to buy a used pillow. If you tried to return a Tempur-pedic pillow within 30 days and had your receipt and packaging, they should have taken it. If they didn't, they made an error. It should be written on the display in front of the mattress as well as the return policy posted at the cash register. We take back Tempur-pedic pillows all the time at our store. | ||||

| I slept on one in a Holiday Inn of all places. It was fantastic. The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was. Sounds strange but there is no noise when you move around in it or sit on it. When we upgrade to a King bed we plan on getting one. | ||||

| They're easy (and cheap) to make from separate wholesale components. Anyone interested to hear how? | ||||

![]() Anyway, straight to the point - to put together a tempurpedic from "scratch", all that needs to be done is to observe and copy the original. The most basic Tempurpedic mattress is composed of two types of high-density polyurethane foam, a 3" layer of a special memory-foam atop a 5" 'base layer' of non-memory-foam, sometimes referred to as 'traditional' foam. The more expensive tempurpedics have thicker and/or multiple layers. Luckily, these foam products are available online with free shipping. (I'll avoid a very long (and boring) post by leaving out all the whys and wherefores of foam density) Here's what I did: #1 Base layer - 15cm of this 2.8lb/ft3 base foam: $240 Foam Factory - Lux High Quality Foam: FIRM BASE, or Foam Factory - HD36 High Quality Foam: MEDIUM BASE #2 Firmer memory layer - 5cm of Sensus 5lb/ft3 high-density memory foam : $259 5lb Sensus Memory Toppers: Toppers with Natural Latex, Talalay, Visco Memory Foam and Wool #3 Top cushioning layer - 5cm of Aerus 4lb/ft3 memory foam: $220 Memory foam mattress topper pads This was for a king size bed and is every bit as good as tempurpedic. All the foam prducts in the above list are by foamex. I use Foamex products for a good reason: Foamex used to make memory foam for tempurpedic and they're #1 in the industry. Foamex.com is a manufacturer not a distributor, so the tricky part (which I've already done) is find reputable wholesalers/distributors. The link for #1 is for the base layer of 'traditional' polyurethane foam; the product I received from them is fine and they have a satisfactory BBB rating. Link #2 is to a store in CA that has an excellent BBB rating, has a reasonable return policy and was running a sale on the most expensive component I needed (foamex's 'sensus' memory foam.) Link #3 has a most liberal return policy (365 NQA!), fair prices, and uses foamex 'aerus' (a great memory-foam product.) All you need now is a platform bed. I found this story: the nobot :: Make Your Own Mattress and this website: Make Your Own Memory Foam Bed informative. Note! The particular foam's brand/thickness/density varies in each description (mine is the best "for me"). So do your homework. Pete | ||||
