BREAKING: Tim Russert dead of apparent heart attack

Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.

Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo's press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.

In his role as host of the seminal Sunday morning political program "Meet the Press" - which he took over in 1991 - he became renowned for his hard-nosed interviews where he frequently cornered some of Washington's cagiest political figures with tough questions.

THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY. PLEASE REFRESH FOR UPDATES.

Really a loss for the entire country. He was one of the few journalists on television that wasn't afraid to ask the hard questions of people in power and continue asking them until they answered when they tried to avoid giving a real answer...

It's a damn shame. You just never know..

He had his bias, but he was still one of the best out there. Sad day

In a world of O'Reillies, Olbermanns, etc, he'll definitely be missed. Unlike them, he was a professional.

Amen to that, Russert was about news and issues not mindless entertainment.

Most definitely. He was the most fair and in my opinion the best TV journalist out there. His loss will be a loss for America and the standards of media in this country. He was the best and the person everyone should have strived to be like.

Mr. Russert had his own ideas about things, for sure. But the man was fair and balanced. Some in the media just say "we're fair and balanced" for ratings. Mr. Russert lived it. He had standards some failed to meet or recognize.

But more than that, he was a man, a human being. One who strived for fairness, and reached the goal.

Rest well, Sir. Rest well.

BTW, was this a total shock or what?

Definitely. Celebrities die all the time it seems and I never really cared much before other than feeling sorry for the families and such. But I'm actually kinda upset about Russert which is a first when a celebrity dies. I really don't think I'd care all that much if it had been any other journalist.
