| For the first time ever... I donated in a presidential campaign. I gave Obama $15. And then I purchased two bumper magnets.

| The Vote for Change one's. I am excited to put it next to my orangecountymommies.com magnet and my black pseudo flag support magnet that reads "Support sex drugs and Rock n Roll". I hope Obama doesn't mind. (BTW, this is going on the back of a grey Honda Odyssey. WOO HOO!) | ||||

| I'll probably end up retracting my statement if Obama doesn't step up on this FISA issue after coming out so heavily against it during the primaries | ||||

| Yeah, looking more and more like I'll be donating to another cause instead.. Obama has released a statement indicating his intention to support the bill even if retroactive immunity isn't stripped: UT Documents: Statement of Barack Obama supporting Hoyer FISA bill I've called several offices, and will call Obama's again today to see if there's any updates, but if this thing gets through the Senate, I wont be donating to him. Whether or not I'll actively campaign for him I'll have to still think about.. what use campaigning for someone who's supposed to bring change if they're complicit in something like this before even being elected? This is the fund I'll be donating to instead: ActBlue — Blue America PAC vs Retroactive Immunity Details from Glenn Greenwald on the fund here: Letters: What Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Fred Hiatt mean by "bipartisanship" - Salon | ||||

| There will always be a political excuse to avoid doing the right thing here. Now it's, "We shouldn't jeopardize Obama's chances of winning by giving the Republicans this issue to hammer him on." -- In 2010, it'll be the midterms, and in 2012 it'll be his re-election (should he win). He has more power now as a Senator (he can put a hold on it if he wanted to) and the party leader to get the other Democrats in line with him. They may not want to risk a confrontation with the Republicans, but they want internal division even less and would back him if he stood up to do the right thing. He has the power, so not succeeding will be because of a political calculation that it's not worth the risk, rather than an inability to stop it. | ||||

| Assuming he really opposes the bill as written... Isn't there some room for compromise for the greater good? (his election to President?) [this might need a new thread in the Floor] | ||||

| No. Because his entire candidacy is predicated on the idea that he's a different kind of politician, one that will stand up and do the right thing even if it's politically troublesome. That's why I have been supporting him, that's why I want to see him as President. It's extremely disheartening to see his capitulation with the rest of the Democratic congress on an issue that he has already stood up and said he was against. It's within his power to stop this as the nominee, the question is whether he has the political courage to do it. | ||||
