Something for most of you to go apeshit over

LAKEVILLE, Minnesota (AP) -- A Lakeville man says he feels violated after two police officers woke him up at 3 a.m. to tell him his door was unlocked.

Their surprise visit was part of a public service campaign to remind residents to secure their homes to prevent thefts. Usually, officers just leave notices on doors.

But they went further in Troy Molde's case on Thursday. Police entered the house where four children under 7 were having a sleepover, and then went upstairs to Molde's bedroom.

The officers told Molde his garage door was open, the TV was on, the keys to his truck were left in the ignition and the door to his house was ajar.

A police spokesman says the intrusion was justified because the officers' initial door knocks went unanswered, and they wanted to make sure nothing was wrong.

He says the kids inside -- Molde's two sons and two nephews -- were afraid to wake their dad, so the officers went upstairs.

While I understand the officer's concern...the whole "tv was on thing" didn't really need to be investigated.

I'm not so sure it's that cut-and-dried. I bet there'd be a hearing to decide it.

And something that should scare the shit out of you is if he had a gun under his pillow and shot the cops he'd be on trial for killing a police officer.

Why exactly? I see nothing wrong with what they did. 3am, door ajar, nobody responding to their knocks...seems cool to me.

How exactly does that constitute reasonable suspicion?

Maybe he feel asleep and left the TV on. Real evidence of a crime there, huh?

Where does "door ajar" fit into your statement?

I didn't see that it was ajar, I just thought it was unlocked.

That makes it a little more acceptable, I suppose.

idk man.

Let's say you go to your neighbor's house. It's 3 in the morning, the door is open, the TV is on, and you knock on the door a bunch of times and no one answers. You yell inside and still no one answers. Wouldn't your first thought be that there's something wrong?

Your next reaction would be one of two things: 1) Go inside and check the situation out. Probably not the best idea. 2) Go home and call the police, who would come and do the exact same thing these two officers did.

So what's the difference if the police get tipped off or they just happen to be on the scene in the first place?

Maybe, maybe not. My first reaction would NOT be to go in his house.

If that happened he shouldn't serve a day in jail .. waking up to someone unknown to you in your house, in your room is justification to shoot them.

Killing cops doesn't work that way. Especially not when they're acting in the best interest of civilians they believe to be in trouble.

No, it would be to go home and call the cops, who would then go into his house.

So how is this really any different is what I'm thinking, I suppose

but killing unknown people in your bedroom does. it sort of angers me that he'd get in trouble for killing someone who said "we're the police" ......... like a burglar wouldn't ever do that.

the cops had no business in his house. if they thought he was "in trouble" they could have contacted a family member to go in.
