I just saw 'Hard times at Douglass high' a no child left behind report card. It was a documentary filmed inside a Baltimore inner city high school. It confirmed everything I believe about government education. I will withhold further comment until some of you who have seen it respond....

He was going to retire at 30 years anyway, but said he was glad it was time to retire because of all the bullshit. I always see you supporting the public school system as it is. Are you doing it because it's been a decade since you taught? Or are you just playing blind man?

| But there was a public education system in place long before No Child Left Behind. If we abandon NCLB we can still have a public school system. A little off topic, but does anyone know if you can find test scores based on region or school district and compare them to other countries? I always hear that the US primary education system is far behind much of the civilized world, but I've always wondered how our rich schools compare to them vs how our poor schools compare. *Edit* Did the documentary target NCLB, or our whole system in general? and did it happen to mention any other models that they felt would be superior? | ||||

| That it is, good eye. I can see liking public education and hating NCLB. I would personally like to see education back in the hands of the states, let each figure out their own system, and lets see which works best. | ||||

| I've said a few times in this forum that I think NCLB is crap, but that has little to do with the original post. Last edited by 7960; 06-26-2008 at 05:01 PM. | ||||

| NCLB was a response to the shitty public school system that was allowing kids to graduate High School still not being able to read. Hell, some schools stopped giving academic grades altogether and were giving grades based on attitude and how hard they tried. But I tell you what. Having a 4th grader and a 1st grader has taught me that these kids learn a lot more a lot earlier than I did when I was a kid. I'm really happy with my kids school and their teachers so far have been excellent. But I know they hate having to "teach the test" every day. It really keeps them from creating their own way to educate the kids. | ||||

| I saw the show last night. There was very little about NCLB ![]() The show more or less showed the plight of an inner city school. There were a few complaints from teachers that NCLB put requirements on them, but the situation was so bad that NCLB is the least of their worries. | ||||
