Karl Rove on Barack Obama

"Obama is 'coolly arrogant.' Even if you've never met him, you know this guy. He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone."
Doesn't sound so bad, reminds me of myself a little bit

Obama wouldn't even be allowed in many country clubs.

And how the fuck are people going to look at Obama and McCain and think Obama is the "country club elitist"? McCain married a multi-millionaire trophy wife after leading a life of privledge.
Obama barely paid off his student loans before he entered congress.

It's all about message. Say it enough times, and people will start to believe it regardless of whether or not it makes any sense.

He did attend Ivy League schools, but I don't know if that makes someone elitist.. certainly elite, though.

You think everyone who attends one of those schools is an elitist? Really?

I don't think so. Being elitist is an attitude that not everyone shares just because they got into a set of schools

Yes, yes I do.

Believe me, I'm around them all day and all night. It gets to everyone after a while Some people are really humble and chill going in, but after four years, everyone who comes out is as upper-crust as they come.

I dunno I have to disagree, I have two friends who've gone to Harvard (One my best friend growing up since we were born) for their Bachelor's and they haven't let it get to him in the way you suggest everyone does

I'm sure a lot of the people at the upper tier Ivy's (Harvard, Yale, Princeton) let it get to them especially, but certainly not all.. Seems pretty unfair to stereotype everyone

You do know that I go to an Ivy League school, right?

I'm just saying the vast, vast majority of people I know (including, admittedly, myself) let it go to their head. It's hard not to when all your administrators, faculty, and even family are telling you how smart, successful, and all-around amazing you are.

If someone tells you you're brilliant enough times, you're going to eventually begin to believe it. Whether or not you had originally planned to.

Yeah, but it's not like you're going to Harvard, Yale, or Princeton or something

/tease

And I guess that's true to an extent, but I don't think being good at what you do necessarily fits in with the Republican's view of Obama as out of touch, when you can look at his history and see he's been meandering with the 'common folk' he's supposed to be so out of touch with for most of his life and professional career

Boy... do you have them fooled. Maybe you are actually smart if you have them convinced you are all around amazing.

When the term "elitist" is thrown around it's not about the credentials but the attitude.

Yeah, that was kinda my point. I think going to those schools certainly puts you in an 'elite' class, but it doesn't mean you have the attitude being described by the right wing pundits to describe Obama

they're not harping on him about his schooling, they're attacking him based on elitist comments, like the clinging to guns and religion comment or people not being able to afford their arugula.
