I don't think the president needs to have served in the military. That is why we have the Secretary of Defense. To provide expertise and advice in that field.

Because it is so obvious with obvious historical precedence. Never in the history of these United States has a law abiding citizen been denied the right to own a gun. Restrictions that make sense are implemented of course, however, it's as obvious as it gets.

He acts like it says that verbatim in the constitution. Rights are not absolute.
No, some are unalienable, self-evident, and endowed.

Nugent is a wack job. Let's not take some uneducated guitar players rant as having any more meaning than what it is. He is no more a constitutional authority than is Rosie Odonnel.
How much education does it take to read a Bill of Rights? And it does seem his perspective is matched by the Supreme Court Justices..well...at least 5 of them. Undeed, let's not take anyone's uneducated view of this but rather, look to our Founding Fathers. Did they consider the ownership of a gun a founding right? Hello!

Nor Lincoln's. Nor Woodrow Wilson the WW1 President. Madison's career in the service precluded by his poor health, yet, was President during the War of 1812.

McKinley during the Spanish American War before being cut down by an assassin.

and it took Lincoln how long to get it right? Several strategy and general changes, as well as losing the House in midterm elections

Stayed the course though...didn't he? And thank God he did. His strategy changes very similar to Bush's in that they were tactical, they never strayed off course. The United States was going to be a union, he would not cede to separationist pressure. Slavery would be abolished, yes indeed, several failings and changes in tactics were experienced.

However, the direction was NEVER altered. The war was engaged, not reacted to. Lincoln searched for a fighter, someone to wage war on the south. He denied habeas corpus to southern rebels and fought tooth and nail to defend the decisons he made.

Sound like anyone we know?
