| this is fucking AWESOME! (floating cities) An architect has come up with an innovative answer to rising sea levels - a city that floats around the world. The self-contained 'Lilypad' city will be home to around 50,000 'climate refugees' from the worst hit areas - including London. Centred around a lake which collects and then purifies rain water, the Lilypad will drift around the world following the ocean currents and streams. It will be accessed by three marinas and will also feature three 'mountains' to offer the inhabitants a change of scenery. Pictured: The floating cities that could one day house climate change refugees | Mail Online ![]() ![]() I'm not discussing global warming or rising oceans or any of that shit. I'm just saying this is pretty fucking cool!! | ||||

| I think it is only inevitable for sea-faring cities as our population explodes. This idea is obviously not new, there are many instances in Sci-fi with cities atop of water. If it can be done in a cost effective and safe way, then that is pretty awesome. As I live on the coast, it makes me think what happens to these cities during a hurricane/tropical storm. Submerge them like Atlantis (jk)? | ||||

| what about power generation? food production and waste disposal? How would things get from mainland to these cities? Clearly they would not be able to produce everything that the inhabitants might need or want. Since thier location always changes, I imagine the logisitics of shipping things would become quite complex if not prohibitive. it's an awesome idea but I don't see how it could ever work in practice. Would it hold up to a catagory 5? | ||||

As for food, I imagine that most will be shipped in and other stuff can be grown in greenhouses.
"Neither the cost of building the city or the cost of living there have been revealed." I can imagine a high price for a nice apartment with an underwater view.

Ones I can think of: Easy solar power. Instant access to sea resources. Free temperature regulation (almost no heating or cooling would be needed) You have no access to minerals, ores, ect. would be the only downside, that and storms. | ||||

| There already are 'floating' houses in Holland (?), ..., they are tethered to the gound but have considerable 'play' in their sewage/water/electricty connections, they can rise or fall about 12 feet IIRR as for 'drifting' cities/abodes werent the boat people of the 70's a bit like that | ||||
