| Biofuel refinery explosion Before I moved to Georgia, I lived in a small town called Princess Anne in Maryland. Shortly before I moved, there was an explosion at the biofuel refinery just 3 blocks from my home. As refineries go, this one is tiny. Still, the locals fought hard to stop it from being built so close to a residential zone. An out of state contractor was cutting a pipeline with a cutting torch when the explosion occurred. The contractor was killed and another worker injured. I heard the explosion and just thought it was a sonic boom. I thought no more of it until I saw the story on the local news. According to the news story, the building the pipe was in is actually built to contain (and absorb the shock from) an explosion. Driving by there the next day, you could see how the walls blew out near the floor and yet stayed pretty much intact, like they just expanded. Pretty cleaver idea to build a structure designed to expand like a balloon in case of an explosion, thus limiting the amount of "collateral" damage. Still, I am glad I don't live there anymore. If it happened once, it could happen again.
