Suddenly it's not so compassionate.

I rest my case.
it's easy to justify taking my money when you're putting in $1 in the pot and taking $10 out. if I could get that deal I'd sign up today.

What if it was her fault that she was disabled? What would that change?

It wouldn't change anything in MY mind, but to some people on the right, it would make a difference.

I don't think you would sign up at all. My ex wife has Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, degenerative back disease, an artificial hip, an artificial knee, diabetes, and she is in constant pain. She was also burned over 60% of her body as a child.
Anytime you want to trade places with her you let me know.
You can borrow her electric wheelchair.
I hope you never have to live on the $375 a month she gets from disability.

I'm sorry to hear this, but I didn't say I wanted her ailments I said I wanted a plan where I got to force everyone to put in a little so I could take out a lot.

That's alright, my feathers just get ruffled when I think about her situation and how she doesn't deserve it. The thing is, she really does want to work and isn't able to.

Personally I would rather live in a community that had a general insurance policy where everyone paid in some trivial amount. If you became disabled you could draw a benefit from the policy.

How do you stop people from abusing that system?

In short, you do your best and accept that some will "beat the system" no matter what you do. Your goal as the administrator of such a system is to minimize that as much as possible so that overall the system is helpful.

Income redistribution is fueled by class envy and guilt. Here is possably the best explaination yet of how a collectivism works in modern America:

"Instead of viewing people as individuals all to be treated as equals by the law, politicians appeal to group identity. The key to politics, especially in a democracy where the majority rules, is to divide people into groups, pit the groups against one another, and then try to appeal to the biggest group or the group that is most likely to vote. The way to appeal to the groups is to promise them certain things. In other words, to bribe them. I’m sorry folks but that is the sad reality of politics in America. Instead of protecting their right to liberty Americans are much more interested in rent seeking. That is, in making sure they get something from the government, even if it is simply the ability to force other people to conform to their morality."

all taxation is income redistribution. The taxes that pay for the military, the taxes that pay for roads and schools and police. all of it. If you have a problem with income redistribution, then you have a problem with modern society.

Well strictly speaking, I do have a problem with a lot of modern society, and I suspect you do as well

We live in a highly complex society - taxation and at least some form of "income redistribution" is inevitable and I am fine with that. What I am not fine with is all the waste our government produces, way too much bureaucracy, wasteful spending, lobbyists of every ilk biliking the government of millions more, a war that is wasteful in both human life and treasury etc etc. Fix that and just like that our checks look a whole lot better

Well we may have problems with different parts, but to imply that you're completely out of touch just because you don't want income redistribution (and most people including myself understand the need for SOME taxes at least) isn't really equitable.
