How is it not? You show your ID, John Smith, they cross you off the list you vote.

Someone reads the obituary and see's Sam Smith died a couple days ago and decides to vote for him. He is asked for his ID to prove who he is and they turn him away. Makes sense to me.

And you said you don't like ever showing your ID. I don't mind. I like it when I go to a store to use my credit card and they ask for my ID. At least I know that if someone steals my card or I lose it and someone tries to use it they can't in that store.

And I fail to see how this is racist. It's just a fucking stretch scare tactic that dems want to use because it's all they got.

Requiring an ID means someone has to go to another level of criminality in order to vote. If all I have to do is walk up and say my name then what do I have to worry about and what do I need to do to prepare? (answers: nothing) If I have to somehow get an ID that has my picture but someone else's name and address on it then it's not quite so easy to vote. It would also catch MANY more criminals who vote. If felons aren't allowed to vote then they should be weeded out before they vote, not "adjusted for" afterwards.

I'd rather that the government not keep track of my activities. It doesn't need to know whether or not I voted let alone whatever other information may wind up being recorded.

I'd rather just be on my way. If my card gets stolen or lost I'm not liable for any charges incurred while it was out of my possession so that's not a concern for me.

The ID bill itself isn't necessarily racist but I believe the underlying motivation (anti-Mexican/Central-American sentiments) are racist.

Don't you need to have an ID to register to vote? And don't you have to be registered before the election if you want to vote?

Maybe this only happens in our hold-the-man-down southern state of VA

Requiring an ID means the government is keeping track of whether or not you voted. Why should the government be allowed to require my papers and record whether or not I voted?

Felons should be allowed to vote. I think disenfranchisement as a punishment is ridiculous. They're still citizens and they've supposedly "paid their debt to society" by the time they finish their prescribed punishment/rehab.

Don't they do this anyway?

When I vote, they take my registration card and cross me off the list of registered voters who have voted. They don't do that where you are?

The last time I voted was in WI and I didn't have to show any registration. I had a friend come with me and swear that I was able to vote in WI.

I think there needs to be some way that we can verify the person voting is a legal citizen and has only voted once. I am really undecided, i think it sucks, and at the same time i don't think we have any other choice. If you bitch the election results are not right, and then you bitch when there are efforts to fix it, then I dont know what to tell you.

yet you drive a car.......

And I don't. There is nothing anti-hispanic (generalization) about this. It would also keep felons from voting, canadians (yes, it's a problem in the northern states), legal resident aliens who get driver's licenses and are asked if they want to register to vote and say yes not knowing they're not supposed to.......

I registered by going to town hall with an electric bill (proof I lived in the district). YOU could have gone to town hall with my electric bill and done it. But that's not really the problem (IMO). IMO the problem comes on voting day, when I walk up and say my name they hand me a ballot. There is nothing to keep me from walking out and walking back in and saying another name of a registered voter and getting another ballot.

It's illegal. And if you have an issue with that make a new thread.

NO! If I walk up and say my name she crosses it off a list but she has no idea who I really am. Requiring an ID only means she's definitely crossing the right name off the list and I will only get one ballot. Requiring and ID does NOT mean they are keeping track of whether I voted or not any more than they were BEFORE requiring an ID.

Why should the government be allowed to require my papers and record whether or not I voted?
So you don't vote a 2nd time, but that's not the issue here. The issue is that requiring an ID doesn't mean they're saying any more info about you than was already saved, now they just KNOW it was you who voted and not someone else claiming to be you.

Why should you have to prepare?
I was talking about people who plan to vote illegally. If there is no ID required they won't have to prepare anything beforehand. If ID is required then they're going to have to get their hands on an ID that has their face but someone else's name and address. They'd have a lot more to prepare if they planned to vote illegally.

Felons should be allowed to vote.
Start another thread for this. The current law in many places is that they are not allowed to vote. The way to change the law isn't to ignore it and "let them vote anyway."
