UW-Madison Vote 2006 Coalition -- www.buckyvote.com

#3 - At the Polls:

On Election Day between 7am and 8pm, you may go to the polls, register, and vote. You must either bring acceptable proof of residence* or bring a witness that lives in your municipality and is registered to vote to verify your residence.
I never got any sort of registration documents after voting so I assume nothing was recorded though I could be totally wrong

I still think that is a bad way to do it but that is besides the point. So you had to register at the time. That means you gave them your name and they put you down as already voted (unless you lied about your name, did you?). Don't try to say you came in anonymously and voted. You did not and can not. And having to show ID would not change anything that you did.

Last time I checked you were required to have a photo ID in most states, even if you don't drive.

I see no issue with this.

Maybe - I never got any sort of documentation afterward so I am under the impression that I wasn't added to any sort of list/database. I could be wrong.

I know you do not need a photo ID in massachusetts. It went to court already and was shot down as illegal/unconstitutional/violating civil rights or some shit like that.

As far as I know I'm not a registered voter in WI. I never got any sort of card at the polls or in the mail.

Go ask for your registration card. They'll tell you if you voted but not who you voted for.

I just don't get one thing........you didn't have a problem giving your name and having a friend swear for you, but you would have had a problem if she asked for a photo ID and had a friend swear for you?

Exactly how is that different?

Ok, did you give them your name? Do you think they probably wrote it down?

Let's say they didn't. Do you not have a problem with that? Do you think I should be able to go to any state or district or voting place and say "My name is Joe Schmoe, I need to vote but I don't live here" and they let me? You are ok with that????

In fact, last November, a federal court ruled against an identification requirement used at a polling place in Lawrence, Massachusetts, finding that "the burden imposed by this [photo ID] requirement will fall disproportionately on the Latin American community, thereby violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act."

I'm a NY resident now, never had a WI DL or anything. Not sure if I can get that information over the phone.

Paranoia and being a bit of a luddite. I think it's because I assume that showing the picture won't be enough. You can put together a convincing enough fake to fool someone who's not paying attention and glancing at your name/photo. More realistically you're getting your ID's magnetic strip scanned by some machine which will spit out the address/name to the worker who checks it against the physical object. Once that information is extracted, I don't know where it's going or what it's being used for. I don't like that idea. I try to carry/pay for things in cash for the same reason. I don't have a whole lot of control over what sort of information is extracted from me and where it's distributed but I like to try and keep as much as I can. Having a system like this eats away at that.

Call and ask. They'll probably send you a form to fill out and mail back.

And the alternative? You'd rather have people voting 10/20/100 times because nobody is allowed to keep track?

Maybe - the fact that I never received anything from them makes me think that the information was discarded or ignored. I'm not bothered by that.

I think there are bigger problems with the political system than potential duplicate/false votes. I'd rather effort be put into getting rid of the false dichotomy/corporate lobbyist garbage we have going on now than worrying about whether the candidate bought by the defense industry's lobbyist is getting extra votes over the candidate bought by the tort lawyers' lobbist.

Some sort of non-identifying unique ID perhaps? There's no good way to do it without having that information traceable. I'm like Code Pink here. I have no solutions, only complaints.

Oh christ.......there's a road in my town that's unsafe to drive on at 45mph. The solution?? Pass legislation requiring automakers to govern all production cars down to 44mph. Does that make sense??!?!!

How about we fix what can be fixed, ok? It seems every time someone says something like "we should make sure people only vote once" someone thinks the answer is "how about we get rid of political parties! How about we restructure how the entire system works! Rather than have a false dichotomy/corporate lobbyist system we should.................... "

Fucking fuckity fuck fuck fucking fucker...

And it should be traceable, becuase if it's not then people can vote more than once. I don't care WHO you voted for, I only care that YOU picked up your ballot and nobody did it for you. I don't even care if you dropped it in the box or threw it away...only that NOBODY ELSE picked it up.

That's kind of how I see the ID thing.

I don't think the answer to the problem of voting fraud is abolishing political parties. I'm saying that I think worrying about voter fraud when the politicians themselves are frauds is a red herring. It's a distraction.
