House bill to require voter ID

House bill to require voter ID

The House yesterday passed legislation that would require voters to show a valid photo identification in federal elections over the overwhelming objections of Democrats who compared the bill to segregation-era measures aimed at disenfranchising Southern blacks.
Why would democrats block this? Do they not care that people that shouldn't/can't be voting could otherwise vote, or is that what they're counting on?

They *say* it prevents or intimidates people from voting, because minorities are less likely to have and ID and/or are less trusting of govt so don't want to show ID to someone.

Bullshit.

DING DING DING!

my post from another thread--------
"The one lesson we all should have learned from Florida is that the elections process must be more simple and less complicated. The photo ID requirement would take the elections process in the opposite direction.

"Oregon is not alone in its opposition to the photo ID requirement because the damage this provision would cause extends across the nation. The provision would discriminate against the country's minority voters. In fact, last November, a federal court ruled against an identification requirement used at a polling place in Lawrence, Massachusetts, finding that "the burden imposed by this [photo ID] requirement will fall disproportionately on the Latin American community, thereby violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act."

Senator Ron Wyden

Bullshit. If you want to vote you should have an ID ready. No ID? Fuck you.

The first thing Latin Americans do when they get the chance to become legal is get their hands on any ID they can

Because there are people who don't have ID and are legal citizens. There are arguements on both sides of this which are valid however. The number of people voting who are not eligable to vote is tiny. Likewise.. most people have some kind of ID so the number of people who might be disenfranchised is also small. These are people like rural farmers who don't drive and have never needed an ID. Or perhaps Native americans who live on a reservation.

1) How is this possible

2) How prevalent is this...should we risk thousands of illegal votes for just a few legal ones?

3) Are these people really voting if they don't even care enough to have ID?

It's possible, just not common.
For instance a native american living on a reservation. Most of those places are extremely poor. They don't have cars, they work menial jobs. Some of them don't even have any public utilities. They never needed a drivers license or an ID of any kind really. Yet they are still legal voters.

How do you know that there are 1000's of illegal votes?

3) beats me.

It seems to me with the past voting problems that we do know about, and the realization that we don't need ID to vote, the parties will be fraudulently voting in increasing numbers. We've already seen names like Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, etc. popping up in the ballots. I'm willing to be this has been happening a lot more than we realize.

"If you want to vote, get an ID." I'd even go so far as to make a govt issued "voter ID" free for anyone who asks and can prove citizenship...then what's the complaint?

How do you know that there are 1000's of illegal votes?
It's nearly impossible to track this down. Seattle had a lawsuit claiming that illegals voted in the race for governor.

Sound Politics: Secretary of State's Office comments on alien voters

So of course someone wanted to see if it was true and got records and found that at least 2 illegals voted.

Sound Politics: Non-citizens voted in King County

Sure, go for the easy "only two" reply.............. we all know only two illegals voted

Extremely poor? The Indians here in Oklahoma (and we have a lot of them) are loaded, free healthcare, free housing, all kinds of free shit.

From this story: House bill to require voter ID - Nation/Politics - The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

The so-called "Voter ID" bill, aimed at stamping out voter fraud, would require voters in federal elections to provide picture identification by 2008 and provide proof of U.S. citizenship by 2010. It was among the recommendations made last year by the bipartisan Commission on Federal Election Reform, headed by former President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, and former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, a Republican.
"Effective voter registration and voter identification are bedrocks of a modern election system," they wrote in their final report....

But Democrats, siding with groups that work on behalf of minorities and illegal aliens, called the bill a "modern-day poll tax" and said it would place an insurmountable burden on voters and infringe upon their voting rights.
Wow, just, wow. The Democrats can't think that American citizens are on their site with this issue.

I don't like the idea of having to show ID to do anything, frankly.

I bet they have cars and drivers licences. and a big casino or casinos.... BUt there most certainly are poor reservations.

I just want to be clear though.. I don't really have a problem with the voter ID. the number of people it would potentially disenfranchise is tiny. Will it disenfranchise some? probably. Will it be enough to matter in the outcome of an election? I really doubt it.

This was at the end of the article I linked. Not sure what it has to do with the story, except maybe the Democrats are trying to do all they can to let illegals come in and vote for them.

Across the Capitol in the Senate, Democrats continued to slow-walk legislation approved by the House last week to construct 700 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border. The chamber voted yesterday 94-0 on a procedural motion to take up the bill.
Despite universal approval for taking up the legislation, Democratic leaders refused to grant "unanimous consent" agreements to speed up the process.
