Atomic Bomb drills

Is anyone here (other than myself) old enough to remember Atomic Bomb drills in school?
When I was in grade school in the '60s (the height of the cold war), we had Atom Bomb drills. A special bell would ring, and we all had to go out into the hallway and kneel and cover our heads with our arms until the ok bell rang. And we were all told not to look at the flash or we would all go blind. The idea was that huddling in the hall would keep us safe from flying debris. They never told us that flying debris would be the least of our problems if an Atomic Bomb was dropped. We would have fryed like marshmallows on a campfire. But I feel better knowing that at least I wouldn't have gotten hit with a flying desk or gone blind watching the blast.
Terrorism is nothing compared to being told as a kid that your life may end any day in a mushroom cloud.

Nah I missed that. I was in grade school in the 1980's. It is pretty ridiculous though. It's like that "duck and cover" episode of south park.

Oh wow.

There was an old fallout shelter in the highschool in my town. It was pretty creepy down there. I played alot of baseball as a kid and I went to "batting camp" to teach us how to bat properly and inprove our technique and stuff. Batting camp was held in the old fallout shelter under the highschool.

As silly as it sounded it was pretty sound advice, alot of people survived hiroshima/nagasaki who were just behind or under something.

I remember it. We had three types of drills. Tornado, we would go into the hallways and cover our heads. Fire, where we would walk out of the building by class. And atom bomb, where the teacher would close the blinds and we would sit under our desks.

yeah but maybe it would have been better if they hadn't. The radiation really fucked people up.

In all reality the atom bomb drill should have been:

Go to window to check out the massive explosion 2 minutes before you die as you might as well see something badass before you go.

No drills where I was in school, but sure heard about it on television. Some people were building their own fall out shelters though. Funny at the time we had USSR beat 100 to 1 in missles aimed at them. Military wanted more money though, so fear was the name of the game.

I hear stories from my relatives in Nevada about how they would go on top of Mt. Charleston in Vegas and watch them do the atomic testing like it was a fireworks display.

We had Earthquake drills and hid under desks. Then we would walk out to the Football field. Seriously, I could've been learning during those wasteful minutes. Ugh, I'm so glad I'm finished with school.
